Im not looking for a Dojo because I have found one in Mass and one Sensei in RI that mostly teaches Kempo but does basic Kendo. Anyway Im more looking for people in the RI area who are interested in Kendo or who actually do Kendo and if they have found another Dojo somewhere else. Because in RI it's not known for at all what so ever. In my Dojo we are taught by Sensei Matsubara (think thats how you spell it) who is VERY skilled in Kendo but he is back in Japan right now. He vistes us alot to teach the other instructors how to teach....yeah. But I was looking for someone in Rhode Island who also does Kendo or is interested in doing it.

Hello Darkdawn, If your real name was avail. I would respectfully use it. As far as your request for another Kendo Dojo in the RI area. I really don't understand your request. I see that no one has answered and I have a hunch as to why, my reasoning is to defend my fellow Budoka in my area.

And I quote "He vistes us alot to teach the other instructors how to teach....yeah."
Your post is a little confusing. I myself have trained with those fine folks in the dojo you mentioned. Although it was for a short time. Due to my responsibilities elswhere and my regular work week I simply can not train with them at this time. Every few months I try to figure out a way to get there but I simply cannot. I have also had the opportunity to be in a class with Sensei Matsubara and I found it to be a VERY humbling experience. I do not think you will find a Kendo dojo in this area to be as authentic and as genuine as this one. The instructors and students are top quality Budoka and showed me nothing but the upmost respect and kindness in the short time that I was able to train with them. And do hope in the future that I will be able to continue with these fine folks. As of now I cannot. You should consider yourself fortunate to have opportunities to train with these fine folks.
Also unless you go into the Boston area, I do not believe that you will find an affiliated Kendo dojo in the area. If there are, they have my sincere appoligies.
Respects in Budo, Tom Duffy

i thought i was the only one!!!

i'm going to Brown U this coming september (1st year), and found only one dojo just outside providence in Seekonk, MA. Shinbukan, i think they call it. is that the dojo your talking about? Anyways, it practices one day a week, i don't even know if i'll be able to make it out, and so i've been thinking of starting a Brown kendo club. but we'll see when i get there. anyways i'm just trying to find other people who do kendo as well.

Either way, its gonna be quite the change from the Los Angeles area where I can take my pick from 5 different dojos for every day of the week... sigh. i know i'm spoiled don't bother commenting

anyways i hope you still check this but maybe we can exchange contact info?

If you are interested in studying a koryu art, there is a Suio Ryu Study Group in Providence, Rhode Island.

Please contact me at sunehishigi@aol.com for further information.

In terms of kendo in the RI and near by areas you have the following choices:

As far as I know, RI only has the dojo that Matsubara sensei started, Shinbukan (sp?).

If you moved up to MA, there are the college clubs at MIT and Harvard, Boston Kendo Kyokai (in Roslindale), Shufukai in Randolph, MA, and then there is a club, Doshikai, a bit farther north in Acton. Also a club in Salem but the name escapes me.

If you go to CT, as far as I know there is only the Shidogakuin (sp?) in Stamford.

I know it doesn't compare to California where there's lots of kendo, but if you can find a car, you can drive to any of these dojos within an hour (or slightly over that) so that is a lot better than other places where there is no kendo.

Many of these dojos have joint practices frequently and welcome visitors (minus the college clubs because of liability/insurance/student vs. non student issues).

Feel lucky there is this much kendo nearby. Other people drive 2 hours to practice in other places.

Mr. AGLkenshi. (Man I wish people would sign their names just so I can address people in a proper way lol)
Our dojo is in Cranston which is next to Providence, We do not practice Kendo however we do practice Kenjutsu, and Iai. It is different, . Much more traditional. Also as Mr. Stokes mentioned there is a Iai group in Providence. Although I have not had the pleasure of understanding their style, I'm sure Mr. Stokes would be happy to help you if he hasn't already.
As far as starting a dojo at Brown University, I could help you a LITTLE bit. As most of us here in RI we do tend to have our "connections" lol
A very good friend and former AIkido instructor of mine runs an AIkido group at BU. His website is www.usafaikido.com (http://www.usafaikido.com/) please feel free to tell Mr. Fasano that I sent you. He may be able to help you with that, as he is faculty. He is also an art instructor too.
Hey, I may come by and train with ya once in a while if you do so. Because Friday's at Shibukan is simply impossible for me unfortunately.

Any more questions or help that I can do for you just contact me at www.risword.com (http://www.risword.com/) Good luck! Respects, Tom

Which style of kenjutsu does your group practice?

I see from your website that your group practice MJER Iaijutsu.

Or are you referring to the kumitachi portion of the MJER curriculum?
