I am very interested in Kendo and there are Dojo's in my area but I just moved here and am working toward my second job so I don't think I have the money nor the time YET to join. I read the rules and a lot of materials related to Kendo but I haven't had this question answered.
Can you fight (shiai) with one hand? Katate. Is any strike (Yuko Datotsu included) legal if you use only one hand?

Why refer to yourself as "sama"?
I think you can use katate-kamae if you have a legitimate physical reason.

Also, don't spend more than a year in Kansas if you are not white!
Because I was wondering. I have taken many different forms of martial arts and there is a verticle spin kick, I forgot the Korean term for it though and it probably isn't legal but I was curious if you could execute it whilst holding the shinai in the right hand and thrust your hind leg over and your torso twists then bring down the right hand for a men uchi.

If using one hand is legal, im not sure its reccomended, itd stick out like a sore thumb and i think it would look kind of goofy. My opinion. If what your trying to describe is some super complicated fancy move, you better know how to do it fast (and right) , or it will be wasted energy.

i not that sure about this but i believe u can use one hand if you are fighting using a kamae for shoto's, in the case of fighting only with the shoto u would use only one hand and keep the other one on your koshi.

Let me see if I can describe this better in english. (Without the shinai). kick left leg like a round house, as soon as the leg starts to come down, use your right leg to jump off of and at the same time tighten your abdomen and twist your torso (by moving your shoulders) and your right leg should be in the air when your left hits the ground and let the momentum carry your right leg to the ground. If I can remember the name for it I will definately post it.
However, it has occurred to me that wearing a heavy bogu while doing this would not be completely wise.

I'd think that the Hakama would be the greater enemy to the infamous Twisty-Twirly-Ohsogirly move.
And the possibility of being rammed by an unimpressed opponent whilst standing on one leg.

If you'd like to execute complicated kicks and other crap, kendo is not the martial art for you. Kicks, punches and throws are not allowed. Even if they were allowed, a kendoka would just cut you while you were in the middle of your silly move.

KotatsuSama,
Just put down your game controller or joystick, and forget about AAB↑↓→A←→BB moves.
Before you start expanding all your imaginations inside your little head,
I suggest you go visit dojo and actually see kendo.
You can learn somethings about kendo from books, videos or via internet,
but without sweating & feeling pain, you will not gain anything.
....and to your original question, answer is 'yes'.
but when you actually start practicing kendo, you will know why very few ppl use only one hand.

Kicks, throws, leg-sweeps, grapples, etc are not part of modern kendo.
If you'd like to learn a martial art that involves a lot of direct physical contact, with some exposure to various weapons, you might want to check out aikido.

I like breakdancing for my martial arts. I am not in to the whole self defense, punches and kicks, I was there once, wasn't a big fan. I however love Kendo, I have liked it since I was a kid but only recently heard about it near where I live. Remember, I am from KANSAS. The baron wasteland of the world (in my opinion).

I have already done martial arts. I was in Tae Kwon Do, I made it to Red Belt and we learned weapons. I don't care about that. I want to learn Kendo. And second, my friend was the one who told me about Kendo and he didn't like it because he wanted to learn Samurai fighting but I don't I want to learn Kendo.
I don't mean to sound 厳しい but I don't play video games, I do watch Samurai flicks once in a while but I am not into it that much. I saw a Kendo match at a park near here on a drive to the DMV and it made me start thinking about Kendo again. At which point my friend (who was in Kendo) told me all about it.

Do Kendoka generally dislike outsiders?

My question was "is it legal for a person to strike with only one hand?" with the shinai. I really don't know how it got wound up into this long thing about kicks and punches other than the move I was describing which isn't a kick or a punch.
Edit: Ugh, I see now, ok let me rephrase the post at the top
"I was wondering if it is LEGAL for you to strike with only one hand holding the shinai" Ugh, both my Japanese and English need work.
Also, I noticed that the Jodan-Kamae's Men Uchi is a one handed strike no?
Thank you for answering the question earlier though.

Kenshi who use Jodan usually strike men and kote with one hand, but the kamae itself is two handed. I don't know if this is what you meant with the "is it legal to do shiai with one hand", if this means that you want to fight the whole shiai with one hand, then yes it is legal but I do not see any advantages in it. Also when you strike one-handed it is more diffivult to score.

Even from chudan you can strike one-handed - tsuki (a thrust) is often done this way. But trying to cut one-handed from chudan is pretty slow for most mortals. I have seen video of a jodan player from Japan that could execute a single handed kote-men combination faster than I can do with two hands though...

we used shinai with rubber bands that pulled the hairs off your arms. We practiced with um sticks (I can't remember what the Korean names are... ) but it was mostly with the Shinai and short sticks. Nunchakus were taught to the belt above me though. I really don't remember a lot it was a while ago, but i remember how much those damn bamboo sticks hurt and how much they pulled the hair off your arms.

if you practice ni-toh-ryuu, all the attacks are katate. that's because both hands are occupied by a shinai, and a sho-toh.

I have seen that. It's more acrobatic that lethal. The first kick is only to gain momentum for the second kick. It's all show.
This move just might work in kendo but you couldn't wear the uniform and armor. It's too heavy, but you could replace it with a red, white, and blue rhinestone-covered spandex outfit.

Yeah, you can use katate-kamae if you wish. Its called "Age-To" according to most books and Sensei. Very rare to see it the sole kamae of a player, its most often seen as a "transition" kamae for a missed strike from Jodan.
Yamamoto Sensei is a Jodan player and is one of the few people who ever seems to use this regularly...mostly because he is insanely strong. There is a quick clip of him doing it after a missed hiki-waza attempt on our website at:
http://www.halifaxkendo.org/movies/AgeTo_High.WMV
There is also a great documentary I downloaded off the internet about a guy who has no left hand. He fights using the Migi-te Variant of Jodan no Kamae, (ie right hand at the bottom) and rests the Tsuka in between the thunmb and forefinger of his left prosthetic hand. But, after his first strike, unless he has time to place the shinai back into the false hand, he ends up fighting his matches from Age-To. Its quite unbeliveable to see him. The winning point in the final match of the tournament he was in was an Age-To Kote. Picture that...hitting his opponents right kote, from Migi-te Age-To. Awesome.
Long story short, unless you're really good, or have some kind of injury or handicap, most people don't even think about katate based kamae.
