That game was horrible. At least it wasn't actually trying to be like the movie.

I've heard of that anime as well.. But it was based somewhat off of that crappy videogame. It's a bunch of "Samurai robots." I read about it in an issue of Animerica, I think that was the name.

The remake of the greatly acclaimed "Seven Samurai" by Akira, was remade to a Anime (which I'm watching and it's VERY good), called "Samurai 7". The theme is beyond our world perhaps it was, but it's not noted, and somehow some of the many samurais found a way to mechanize their bodies, as well as bandits (who mechanized their bodies to big robots [so it seems]) as a small town is raided every time they harvest their rice, they decide to hire samurai to deal with thier foes in return - free rice :D

I've never seen the movie, but I am looking for it as well :D Saw it on Amazon, might get it :D

SUGOI!

OH, it's not really all 100% mecca, like Gundam (i hate meccas) but it's more of hmm.. Full Metal Alchemist meets Naruto meets Samurai Champloo type :) WOO HOOO

The anime Samurai7 really dissapointed me. Most mecca anime dissapoints me. The only exception being Dai-Guard. But yeah, peacemaker was VERY good. It's also intresting for all of the Kenshin fans becuse you see both sides.

Also, speaking of the shinsengumi: http://d-addicts.com/forum/torrents.php

There you can download NHK's shinsengumi and other great shows. Their is also another on Musashi!
Enjoy :-p

folks...just to let you know that there was a "remake" of the 7 samurai a few years ago, in 1998, and it was called "A Bug's Life". (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120623/)

if you don't belive me, just watch both movies again.

project

ps : even if you do belive me, you should watch the two movies again with that in mind.

Yeah. I first watched A Bug's Life and when the whole premise unfolded I was thinking to myself, "Well...this...sounds really familiar..."

i thought, when i first noticed the relation about 2 years ago, that it was one of the prettiest tribute to Kurosawa.

I think I will as well.

This time, though, I'll have to make sure to look for the similarities.

Yeah, the Anime remake Samurai 7 is pretty good. The artwork and animation is pretty sweet. Unfortunately, some parts of the storyline is a bit out...especially how they have these huge mecha samurai and spaceships that get hammered by villagers with pickaxes and arrows...

Overall tho' its pretty good.

That has been my quest for some time, and I'm happy to say that I have only about 3 or 4 left, and they are the ones extremely hard to get ahold of where I live.

which ones ?

Sugata Sanshiro, its sequel, The Most Beautiful, and Men Who Tread on the Tigers Tail, which I'm pretty sure means his first 4 films.

I really liked Stray Dog (Toshiro Mifune fan!), so I hope you enjoy it as well!

Yeah, those are the only four I haven't seen.

Akira Kurosawa is quite possibly the best Japanese director I have seen so far in the 6-7+ years I have been into Japanese films.

In a way, I liked Ran more than Kagemusha.
I fekt Kagemusha to be a little slower than Ran, but it's still a great film.

Ran is simply ambitious in every aspect and it succeeds in every of them!

i don't know many japanese director, but he is 3rd in my top 10 worldwide director's list (1st : lynch, 2nd : kubrick), so i think its going to be hard for any other japanese director to take that rank

but while we're at it, could you name me 3 of your other favorite japanese director so i could look into them ?

thanks,

Sure thing!

Here are 3 directors to look into:
Kenji Fukasaku
Takashi Miike
Takeshi Kitano

Here are some others that might be of interest:
Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to Akira)
Seijun Suzuki
Sogo Ishii
Yoshimitsu Morita
Yasujiro Ozu
Kenji Mizoguchi

You can also check out http://www.midnighteye.com. It is a website that specializes in modern Japanese cinema. They have reviews of films and books, and they also put a book out, which happens to be a great read, called The Midnight Eye Guide to New Japanese Film.

If you want to know anything else, feel free to ask.

Back to the topic of Samurai 7... I didn't really like how they mixed mecha and samurai... >_< It seems so odd.

As for Samurai Champloo, has anyone watched that Anime? It has some of the most brilliant sword-fighting animation i've seen in an Anime :D

A little anti-heroish but really fun to watch :)

I personally liked them both. However, The Ring was definitely American. If you watch the two and compare, you'll see what I mean.

I have seen champloo and you are right, its pretty good. A lot of the fighting is still too cartoonish but at least they don't scream, hiten mitsurugi ryuu blah blah before doing something, haha.
