I've done a search on here and looked at the many links and explanations provided, but I was wondering, all the links show the Hakama tied in a kind of bow at the front, does this get in the way of the Tare or Do or am I missing something.

cheers

Matt

Here's a really good site on how to tie the hakama,

http://www.mushinkankendo.com/kendo_uniform.html

The pictures aren't the best, but it's very detailed on how to do each step.

I'm not an expert on these matters, but it seems to me that the bow on the front of the hakama is not generally used in Jodo, NiTenIchi, etc., as it could catch your opponent's weapon and cause injury. The himo ends should be simply tucked either side of the knot. For Iaido, the ends can be formed into a "bow". However, as in all such matters, it is advisable to consult your Sensei, and senior students in your Dojo will be glad to help too.

When you tie the hakama for kendo, the front(sencond knot)is just a regular knot, it shouldn't be any special bow unless you are practicing iaido.

The final knot in the front can be tied just like a karate belt. The loose ends are then tucked underneath the himo on both sides.

I was told by one of our sensei that tying a bow in front of the hakama in Kendo is no longer used (he usually gives us updates on recent revisions including changes in the way we do katas).

Weird... this is the type of inconsistency that occasionally confuse me. I have been taught to do some katas differently according to different senseis. I don't even tie a bow in the back of the hakama as per the instruction of one of my senseis (he said it's not really necessary... tying a knot is much more convenient and faster). I guess you listen to whoever is teaching you and adapt to what they want. Isn't there a standardized way set by the IKF or the AJKF? One of our senseis is a member of the Canadian Team so I trust he is well up to date on these matters (he was the one who said that tying a bow in front of the hakama is no longer used... he used to tie a bow).
