On the subject of photography - how do things stand regarding flash photography at shiai (never having made it to a large one)? I generally turn my flash off, though this does make for very arty (read: blurry) pics

David,

Not a master photographer, but here's what I've learned over the days of Kendo photography....

Generally, use a tripod! or any support material you can find to avoid handshakes. Used that once with my old+cheap digital camera... just turned out ot be a little bit red... You can create artistic ones by following the movements of a particular Kendoka (just like taking a photo of a cyclist).

If you are rich enough, invest in those professional long tele-lenses (a combination of that and fast film will result in sports-journalist style photos).

Use fast film: ISO 400 or above for actions. But mind you those are quite grainy for large prints. Otherwise get as much light as possible.

It's just common sense not to flash during a Shiai. After the match it's fine.

hmmm....i don't know too much about photograpghy, but what about if you tried this, stick a lighter in front of the camera...maybe that might work, i am pretty sure it would iliminate the need for a flash. :D :D . However be warned I have never tried this before, and do not expect you too do either...but do at your own risk.

Most people seems to use flash. Also, most of the idiot proof cameras will use flash automaticly. I've never been distracted by while fighting either.
