Hi everyone,
I'm new to kendo and I often read threads about Japanese kendo and korean kumdo.
From I've read, there is a differece between?
Whats different?
Thanks if you can answer this, so i can fall asleep without thinking about it for 20min
Thanks

Kumdo is different from kendo in that it is more sport focused. Kumdo is more about getting the point in shiai and winning, small cuts and often not much attention to form, as long as it gets the point. Kendo focuses on art and tradition, keeping good form while fighting, even though some people are still all about winning a match, and lose their form. I practice kendo, so I am only commenting on kumdo from what I have seen and read. I'm not saying either is better than the other, just that they focus on different things.

Therefore your comment is poor.
Your description of "kumdo" is not any different from what other people think of "high school kendo".

Please use the search function at the top of the page, and you'll find that this one has come up a number of times before. The biggest difference - kumdo came from Korea, kendo came from Japan.

The second letter of kendo is an e. The second letter of kumdo is u. The third letter of kendo is n. The third letter of kumdo is m.

Thanks. That gives me a better understanding of kumdo. I suppose you are right that since I don't practice kumdo me saying that doesn't hold to much. But I wouldn't say it makes my comment poor, maybe guided by the wrong information, but not poor. ^_^;;;

Not to get into it again but... kumdo came from Japan, just like kendo did. It's kendo through the Korean cultural filter.

The biggest difference I have seen (other than the linguistic differences) is the fact that Kumdo has an important sword routine called the "Bon Kuk Kum Bop". I've never seen any references to any such thing in Japanese Kendo literature, so I don't believe this is used in Japanese Kendo. It is generally practiced by students with a bokken, but a real swrod may be used as well. However, the Nihon Kendo kata (also with a bokken) are the same in both Kendo and Kumdo, but obviously under a different name in Kumdo.
