i recently visited an other dojo and found that a lot of the students there had Japanese writing on there hakamas. Can anyone tell me if they have seen this before and what is is placed there for. i could not understand what it said but just curious why it would be there.

It's just names on the (right) buttocks. Some may even include the name of their dojo along side the name or on the koshi-ita itself. Some may have commemorative writings next to their name (e.g. 2003 World Kendo Championship in kanji etc).

thank you for that i was really curious. i thought it may have been their ranks or something, cause some have more writing than others.

cheers

If the hakama was a gift, it might say who the gift was from and the reason for the gift.

I have some writing on my hakama....
strangest thing!

it's on this really worn down patch and it says,
"If you're reading this you've scrubbed too hard" in kanji

It is typically your name. You may add your club, city or town, or any other info about yourself that you would like. The majority of people, I believe, only have their names.

My hakama has helped me several times during shiais. Since I train in Japan and most people are not familiar with Western names, when they ask me my name for filling out forms, I simply turn around and show them my right backside (of the hakama, that is).

But won't they look at you funny when they see you looking at their buttocks? I know they do to me.

Something like this in this link? If anyone can translate what it says on the hakama then you are great!

That common phrase can be found on shinai bags etc. See Koei's catalogue for example.

Bleech. That's all wrong and tacky. That would be the equivalent of sticking a big patch of a cobra on the back of your keikogi and removing the sleeves.

I do Kumdo, so I have Korean writing on mine. On the right buttock on the right (vertically) is the name of my school, then right next to it to the left is my name. It's embroidered with a sewing machine, and very small -- each character is about 1.5 cm. Everyone in class has the same, except the teachers have theirs written in Chinese characters (which is also the old Korean alphabet), while everyone else has Hangeul (the modern Korean alphebet).

It says "munen musou" (no reflection, no thought) but it is written wrongly, starting from the bottom and going up (!). It is as someone said, a very common phrase in kendo. It is also, clearly, on the front of the hakama.

Unlikely IMHO that the person selling ever did kendo. More likely belonged to a karateka.
