Does anybody have an "altar" of sorts where you keep your bogu, Shinai, and other things? Basically, I am looking for an attractive way to organize and display some things that are important to me, like also my shaman's drum and smudges and some other things. Thanks.

I have a corner in my room with a bulletin board with my medals, broken shinai staves behind it, and in front the certificates and stuff I've gotten, and also keikogi that don't fit me anymore

I think this thread belongs in "Top 10 signs you're obsessed with kendo". :D
(I have a kendo corner too by the way, but not an altar altar if you know what I mean).

Well. no "altar"...
But maybe something like this might be interesting for you to see?

Yes, you got the idea  I think the "vertical" rack for swords is a good idea, it allows more room for expansion  For myself, I'm picturing a bogu stand either on top of some shelves, or shelves on the wall above the bogu stand, and I'd like a spot for one shinai horizontal in front of the bogu.

What's the point of a bogu stand though? Aren't you going to be using your bogu often?

I just leave my bogu at the dojang or in the carrying bag.

I was told not to leave the bogu in the bag as it won't have time to dry out and smells rather bad. Also the kote palms will become too soft and can be holed easily.

That's nice! :) But a question, that men in the corner in the newest picture, it looks smaller than the other one, is that a real men or a miniature for decoration? If there even are such things?

Nice! Did you make the stand?

No...it's a run of the mill bogu stand that KOEI, E-Bogu, and Musashi-Go carries.

Bogu Stand (http://www.e-bogu.com/Bogu_Stand_p/hir-acc-tra-bogustand--.htm)

I got it from Mr. Riordan in Australia a long time ago.

As the men that looks smaller, it the new MINE men that I got. It is smaller, but appears even more so because of the camera angle.

Keep leaving your stuff in your bag is gross? It's bad enough you can't wash some of your gear but to leave it in your bag? That just tell us about your hygene. Do you brush your teeth everyday? Once? Twice?

I leave it out when I'm home because I leave it at the dojang. When I'm at school I leave it in the bag. It's not like I wear it much at school anyways.

And I brush my teeth twice a day.

OK Since I started it ;) I am too new to have bogu yet, but this is what I have so far--heart drum with raven and sun on it; top shinai is for my daughter, bottom shinai is mine; string of turtles from Lakota booth at a Pow Wow (has something to do with their creation myth); the thing in the middle has the same weight and center of balance as a Size 39 shinai, but my house has only 7' ceiling, so I can use that to at least go through the motions when I feel like it without hitting the ceiling or having to do it on my knees.

I'm working on another one that will be better looking, it will have a copper band around the "heavy" end. I am sure some people would say it is not good, but except for air resistance, mechanically it should be the same, and it should be good enough to do some Suburi to develop muscles. I woud not rely on it totally, but it is convenient if I get up from the computer to stretch and just want to do a few Men! just for the heck of it :)

Why are those tsuba on funny? They should be up against the notch that defines the transition from the tsuka to the blade.

Yea.. those tsuba can be pushed up further. I find with most bokken they're bloody difficult the first time!

umm the circle thingy(not the white ring) doesnt want to stay there its pretty loose except where it was..so i guess it will stay so it doesnt fly around when doing kata.. might have to take it off when we do grading? dont want to get told again its in the wrong spot.. or not pass coz of it..

Paikea

You reamed out the tsubas large enough to fit over the tsuka (handle), didn't you? Oops...they slide down over the blade and are held up against the tsuka by the tsubadome (white ring).

Fortunately, they are cheap.

might have to glue it so it stays where its meant to.. the tsuba can be pushed down the handle (a bit tough) but slides down the blade...

That's what I thought, too.
What about the Smirnoff? Do you need it for some Voodoo rituals to bless your swords?

That sure is one fine looking piece of steel.
As for your alter, I like the way you've balanced the Smirnoff with a bottle of Bundy. Is feng shui at work here?

Paikea
6th November 2004, 12:40 AM
might have to glue it so it stays where its meant to.. the tsuba can be pushed down the handle (a bit tough) but slides down the blade...Either the bokutoh is of a somewhat thinner dimension that the tsuba was made for, or the tsuba was enlarged too much. If the tsubas were wrecked, they really are only $3.00 US at e-bogu.com, (http://www.e-bogu.com/Bokken_s/17.htm) and likely similarly priced in Australia. Gluing it on is, well, less than desirable. Also, because they are polyethylene (or, similar plastic) glue isn't going to stick.

Chook
6th November 2004, 06:42 AM
Yep! Feng Shui... now I'm going to have to drink the Smirnoff ASAP to balance it out again. :D

I've also got 3 shinai, 2 more bokken, and a wooden shoto for kata 7-10. I think one of the funniest things I've even seen is my 3 year old niece with the shoto pretending to be a samurai. :D:D:D Next time it happens, I'm getting pictures. It was awesome
