i went with my university dojo yesterday to renton, washington for the pacific northwest kendo taikai. :) it was something to see!
it was my first time at a kendo tournament since i joined kendo in september. it was quite a good experience i just say. one thing i wondered about, what are they shouting!?? something in japanese? or just nothing in particular, simply for their kiai?

All I hear at the taikai I have gone to are just things for their kiai.

Kiai are an endless source of amusement, especially the kiai of people trying to scream foreign languages. Maybe it's a mental tactic, they're trying to make me fall over laughing, and thus expose myself to a dizzying flurry of attacks. Or maybe that guy doesn't know he's screaming 'egg' in French. Who knows?

There was a looong thread here somewhere on kiai. Do a search for it, it was quite informative.

'Wahaah' is also pretty nice. I often choose between 'wahaaah' and 'weeeh'
My japanese sensei sometimes screams something that sounds like 'Ahoy' :D

Yup... He was really nice with us, "beginners" in bogu... he's cool!
When was that tournament you were talking about, kenD'OH?
There are all sorts of kiai possible. From AAA to III, or LEEE to YEA YEA.... it's not only Japanese words... but all sorts of diferent sounds.. that help us to concentrate on the fight or intimidate your opponent!
