i was wondering, how come nobody wears them? i haven't come across any pics of them online or anywhere. is it becuase they get dirty easy? maybe they are for women? (like the white robes)

Hello

As you say white clothing does stay cleaner

Most of the shops have a white set of Bogu in all the catalogues. But mostly they cater for girls in small sizes.

White bogu tends to get really dirty. It also looks like a bleached tomatoe chopped open. I really don't like the look of it at all. The red colour usually used for the dou looks like technicolour vomit.

Aside from that, the kote end up looking like they were sitting out in mid-19th century London for a few weeks, that is to say, they're grey and smokey blue all over. I have yet to see a set of white bogu that aged well. They all look like the rewards of dumpster diving kendouka.

the white bogu is for women.. but the "white robes" as you call them are worn by men and women.. my master wears one most of the time..

alot of korean players will wear white as well- from visual experience, it looks to me like the blue dye from 'regular' colored bogu can sometimes stain the white pretty badly if you're not careful, resulting in a less than appealing splotchy white/blue look-

kind of like if you washed a big blue sock in with all your white clothes in the laundry-

are there any other colors besides black, dark blue, and white?

I think you're headed for some frustration here...

Kendo gear is only done in certain colours, due to err.. tradition, which you can debate is a good thing / bad thing etc.

Whilst your purple kote with dragons on would actually look pretty cool IMHO, they'd be a little unconventional to say the least. Have a hunt round the forum - this has been done to death before.

Two words that rarely fit together well, especially in Kendo gear. ;)

Try these for a start

www.tozando.com (not cheap, but good stuff)
www.ninecircles.co.uk (Korean, quick, competitive)
www.eurobogu.net (supposedly good, also reasonable)

Happy shopping!

White bogu is worn by some women. Most senior women wear blue for two reasons: 1. the white bogu is normally associated with players who aren't too serious and 2. you can't get very good quality in white, most of the sets are cheaper because of reason 1.

Also the color of Indigo dye is dark blue. Can't imagine the smell of it all without the benefit of Indigo.

A girl at our dojo just bought a white set from kendo shop and it looks absolutly stunning, even though the do in the picture did look really nasty....when it came it was a really deep dark red. I'd recommend a white set to all women they look great. The only reason I didn't get a white set myself is because they only seem to do the, in 5mm or 3mm machine, and I was after some nice 1.2 handstiched.

Or maby you could do it for her...?
I would really like to know more about the quality.
I have a friend who bought a 5mm indigo bogu from them. He says that Men and Kote is too thin. He has now substituted these with 3mm...

Stick with the indigo blue...

Indigo blue dye acts as a mild disinfectant that keeps your bogu sanitary and smelling a bit better.
