Hello,
I just started training in Japan after learning Gom Do in Korea. I had most of the Korean terms and words figured out but now I have to learn again. Most of these threads have great advice but sometimes I don't know what the terminology of a certain waza or kata or other element is. So...am I missing an obvious thread that already explains these things or can somone redirect me to a place where I'll be able to cross reference the terms used in the forums?
Anyhelp with easy reference sources would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

I find myself looking for translations of terminology too... you kinda gotta piece it together from a number of different sources.
however >THIS< (http://www.boston-kendo.com/glossary.htm) site is a pretty long glossary.
peace!

While possibly not THE most efficient approach to your issue, I would nonetheless recommend a book from the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) titled "Japanese - English Dictionary of Kendo".
Not quite pocket-size, it is still small enough to fit into a cargo pocket of your pants, a small compartment in your backpack or your bogu bag. It is also illustrated in many of the right places to help further clarify things.
I presume that you can grab a copy directly from the AJKF. I ordered mine through www.eguchi.net (http://www.eguchi.net), my favorite supplier here in the U.S. (they're located in Southern California). Hang in there. Good luck.

There is a lot of kendo reference material here:

including a pretty extensive dictionary.

Li:Te, I also started Kumdo before I joined Kendo club so I understand how you feel. This website might give you some hlep for basic kendo terms but I strongly recommend you to get a kendo book such as 'Kendo The definitive guide' by Hiroshi Ozawa.

Thanks folks...those web sites are a great help. I'll definitly use them. I am in the process of getting a book too, which I figure will help alot. Just knowing what waza someone is referring to is fairly important when your trying to learn at a dojo where noone speaks English!
Thanks again,
Jason

Hey in our dojo some students can't count in japanese, so sometimes students count in english...cos if they count in japanese and miss the timing, we have to start haya - suburi again and again and again....and again *pant pant* and again..

this one weird guy in my dojo can't count in japanese
(kinda ironic that he wears a hakama and yet he can't remember 1 to 10 in japanese....)
but anyways... one time we had to count in groups of threes... like 3 people count twenty in 2 sets of 10, then the next three count 20.. etc
so he was in my group and when it came time for us to count he started in english, and then when he got to 12 he said 20 instead (???crazy??) and then thirty.. and then forty
so he went from eleven to twenty.. thirty.. forty
we managed to continue but the next group of three thought they had to start at 100 or something so they paused.... and then one guy started again from 1.
i dont even know what THAT was all about.
