There is an exhibit of ukiyo-e prints at a museum near my home. Our local newspaper showed one on its front page of a swordsman fighting giants bats. The caption says it is a depiction of Musashi from a legend about his being attacked by bats. I am skeptical. Has anyone heard of this legend before?

What a concidence, I just happened to watch a movie about him today. Is it true that for his practice he would kill swallows in the air?

Yoshikawa has Sasaki Kojiro cutting down swallows, not Musashi. Not that I know if either actually did that.

Have you ever wondered why there aren't any giant bats around today?

well it's because of Musashi....

It would not be a bad idea to practice test cutting, hit the swallow first and then the coconut.

Yes I am, and it was pretty good (it was part 2).

And about the swallows, I will never trust an anime magazine again! :D
(they were doing a samurai special)

Given the high average airspeed velocity of an unladen japanese giant bat, I must say I think this is just a legend. :)

the story for the dragon thing with musashi, is a hobgoblin? quote from a book i got of mrs yabe sensei "musashi served lord kinoshita of himeji, assuming false name "Matasubuo". He was assinged to patrolling the main tower. At that time ther was a rumor that a hobgoblin appered in the main tower. Many of his colleagues were frightened adn didnt go on duty at night. Musashi was brave enough to offer to patrol for them. The lord's chief minister thought he must be somebody. At last he was found out to be the famous musashi. He was invited as a guest by the Lord. The lord aked him to ward off the hobgoblin in the tower. One night when he was climbing up to the 3rd floor, there was a flame coming down and a big noise all of a sudden. he thought it was the hobgoblin and was about to draw hi sword. But nothing happened and there was silence. again there was a flame and a big noise when he was going up to the 4th floor. he Kept going up and up until he got to the top floor AND THEN........ he took a nap until moring. when he woke up he saw a bueatiul princess with a twelve layered costume and said 'By heck, i'm boiling in this, oh hello, i am the guardian goddess of the castle. You have drove off the ghost, so you shall be rewarded with a treasure sword, bye' and then she dissapered. Musashi put the sword in a plain wooden box. It had been kept in the castle treasury and he was suspected of stealing it and then was confined to the minister's house for a while until suspitions were dispelled" *note, some of this may have been dramatised, by me! hahaha:)

There is a difference in the Book Musashi and the actual Musashi. The book goes on to talk about his radical quests including a duel that he participated in where he carved a Bokuto out of one of the paddles on his boat, with this he struck down his adversary. (Take with a grain of salt)

There is little doubt that Musashi used a bokutoh to defeat Sasaki Kohjiroh. It was not the first time he used a bokutoh in a fight. When and out of what the bokutoh was carved is debatable. It would be expected that Musashi would have carved the bokutoh some time in advance of the fight to give himself time to practice and get used to its weight and balance.
