actually it's up to your imagination you are between 999kyu and 2kyu before testing for 1kyu

it's like kendokamax says, the only commonly awarded grade before shodan seems to be ikkyu. I tend to prefer this approach myself, actually...

I think they let them skip 6th to 1st kyu or shodan.

it could also vary with different dojos. I know some dojos which starts you off at 6th kyu and no skipping is allowed, other dojos may only have tests for Shodan and onwards.

i think it's quite common in japan that adults go for 1kyu first which is what i did. also this is the lowest grade that is administered by the local city kendo federation. lower than 1kyu is done at the clubs i think or at smaller area meetings.

A friend of mine had this conversation in Japan a few years ago:
Sensei: "What grade do you have?"
Friend: "4th kyu."
Sensei: "Hmmm... 4th dan."
Friend: "No, 4th kyu."
Sensei: "KYUUUU???"
Not much time later he was prodded to his dan exam.

I know according to the IKF regulations if i remember right up to nikyu its up to the federation or dojo to assign rank how ever they please, ikkyu is the only rank your formal required to test for before going up for shodan test
