Hey, was just wondering how many tested there at the mumeishi grading in London. From what ranks? Congrats, by the way!!!

There were 106 registered for the grading and 6 didn't turn up. Mostly ikkyu and shodan. We had people grading up to yondan.

What would you say the average passing rate was for each ranking?

GMason

Yondan - 0
Sandan - 2
Nidan - they all passed (I think)
Shodan - Loads
Ikkyu - Loads

Basically I guess only about 20 - 25 people failed.

There where some very good Nidan's and some good Shodans as well from what little I saw.

Thanks Mingshi,

I am grateful that you had a photo of the information :-) I was actually very interested in the passing rate for the 2-dans to the 4-dans. I think that it is interesting see the different passing rates for the different countries. Does anyone have any information on the Canadian or US passing rates for those ranks?

Cheers :-)

Here are the results as promised. The numbers are not 100% because they changed the registration format and it was difficult to get a true count of how many people actually registered/attended. There were also some numbering issues, 1D7A and 1D7B, so I just could not look at the highest number and guess that that person was the last to be registered in that division.

approx 100 Ikkyu and 74 passed
approx 36 1st Dan and 34 passed
approx 28 2nd Dan and 28 passed
11 3rd Dan and 10 passed
10 4th Dan and 6 passed
1 5th Dan and 1 passed
8 6th Dan and 6th passed
3 7th Dan and 3 passed

If anybody is interested this is the info for the iaido from the previous day

approx 30 Ikkyu and 29 passed
approx 21 1st Dan and 20 passed
11 2nd Dan and 10 passed
1 3rd Dan and 0 passed
3 4th Dan and 2 passed
3 5th Dan and 3 passed

Again these are not 100% accurate, but likely close enough for comparison as requested.

3 7th Dan and 3 passedNavyguy, Thanks for taking the time to collect the data. The results are still pretty positive. I was curious about the 2-7 dans.... it seems the passing rates are extremely good. Which Federation is this under? Surprised to see the passing rate of the 5-7dans being so very high. Did you get the chance to see these?

Which rank will you be trying for next year? Thanks again!

This is from the Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF). I did watch these people. Not having the experience to really qualify my statement, I thought the passing rate was high also (all ranks). I hope that is a good sign that the clubs are doing a good job of getting quality kendo out there.

I noticed a jump in the quality of Kendo at the 3rd Dan level to the 4th Dan level. There seemed to be a noticable difference in the ability. Not so much between the 4-7th. I thought that was interesting. Again this is just my thoughts.

I will be going for Nidan next year.
