I would so like to watch.. how much are tickets?
Can anyone tell me how the all-japan kendo comp is run? i mean.. i'm sure there are thousands, maybe not thousands but hundreds at least, of competitors.. how do they organize the prelim rounds and such? i'd imagine it being run throughout the year to eliminate most competitors and then holding the higher rounds over the last couple of days or is there something else. Is there a strict criteria you have to meet before entering?

In the months before the competition there is Tournaments in every Prefectures.

The people who place in top for these tournament get a ticket for the all japan.

Smaller Prefectures usualy only send one participant (the winner of the prefectrue tournaments). Bigger Prefectures send more people (tokyo sends 4 ).
Plus the winner of the last year tournament gets a free pass.

In total there is 64 participants on the day of the tournament.

Go Mitsunobu Sato!!

I'm a fan so sue me.

He's got Ando pretty soon in his bracket though... at least he won't have to go through Iwasa again. Ando vs. Sato sounds like a hell of a match (match no.50 if all goes well).

(Kenji?) Shoudai didn't get to the finals this year. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing his jodan again.

Any non-cops that look strong this year?

AlexM: Is that the young Shoudai who does renzoku waza in jodan?

Yup.

I have a short clip of him from last year (courtesy of Max actually) where he does something like kote-kote-men-kote-men-kote-men... Humans should not be able to do that. It was nuts. No ippon but plenty of spirit.

I heard he went into the police straight out of High School too, no University.

He's in Kanagawa so making the cut each year must be relatively tough. He might be injured of course.

Shodai Kenji is awesome... I have had the honor of practicing with him. Faster than Lightning out of hidari jodan. Believe me, it wasnt until the third time I played him that I could see his shinai. He is 22 and a yondan. His main teacher has been Chiba Sensei. He scored some beautiful men in the Kanagawa Ken Championship and was so fast that the refs didn&t catch a few of his kote! There was an article last year about him in a Japanese newspaper. He was doing 2000 suburi a day, the year, before the All Japan Kendo Championship *Zen Nihon Kendo Senchuken Taikai*/

Shodai wont be in the ZNKST this year because another awesome lighting quick guy by the name of Koyama/another hidari jodan specialist/ along with Takanabe will represent Kanagawa Ken this year... They are both Kanagawa Ken Police and yes, they train with the Miyazaki brothers and some other great teachers!

PS> One advantage of this kind of training, is that when I practice at other dojos/dojo in Japan, most other Hidari JoDan players seem to be much slower! Or more accurately, very fast, but much slower than Shodai, in human terms! Shodai takes you do another dimension of time and space.

Also you might want to know that at the Kanagawa Ken High School Championships, last Spring, among about 2000 participants, there were about 10/15 kids who did Hidari Jodan!

(In Dickensien English accent)

Get back you filthy urchins! Lest you wish to feel my cane on your back-side!!!! I haven't a penny for you...

The clip is a 3,79 Meg Quicktime file. Max originally sent it to me from Japan through MSN.

If anyone has a suggestion for posting the clip somewhere please let me know. You can always contact me through MSN if you wish (check my profile). Assuming my cpu's firewall doesn't screw up the sending (which it sometimes does for no real reason). I can always send it by email if you wish, assuming you have an account with enough capacity (having PM's working would be really practical right about now :D)

I will of course require some kind of payment for this service... something degrading and humiliating... yes, that would fill the bill. I require a sacrifice: your dignity should do the trick.. oh wait, I forgot: I'm not evil. Curses!

BTW, the actual sequence is Kote-Men-Men-Kote-Men-Men... or something like that. Each time I watch my mind wonders off.

I'm surprised Hamish or Dr.A haven't taken the opportunity to plug a subscription to KW magazine by saying: "You know, you could get all of Shoudai's matches on our complimentary CD, and without having to resort to begging that Bastard Alex" :D

I heard he went into the police straight out of High School too, no University.
he went straight from yashiro higashikou to kanagawa police. dont know why, maybe he already knew what he wanted to do and skipped the 4 years he would've spent at university, this is only an assumption. also, there are so many good schools in kumamoto ken, like kyushu gakuin, and aso kou. plus, the ace from kumamoto at the time was a guy called uchimura ryoichi [who went to meiji dai and now a member of keishicho team]. maybe he didn't get offered a place at the university he wanted to go. but eitherway, he's a quality player, no matter how you look at it.

in one article, he revealed that he did 2000 katate suburi every day since highschool. 'nuff said i think -_-"

You got it so right baby!! According to the article, he went to the Kanagawa Ken Police for 2 reasons....> 1/ To be with Miyazaki Masahiro Sensei and his brother Miyazaki Fumihiro Sensei >>2/ To be near #1 Hidari Jodan Specialist
Chiba Sensei *in Tokyo*

Kendo is a way of life for many people here... I can see where university need not fit in the picture...

i've still got your phone number i think so i'll call you in a couple of days. my sensei phones me today to let me know that he had got me a "free pass" so i'm definitely going. i can't wait.

also, for everyone else, at this link http://www.kendo.or.jp/english-page/52nd-All-Japan-Kendo-Champ2004.html you can find the tournament ladder. i'll be rooting for Takanabe Sensei and Koyama Sensei who are both from kanagawa. my home is in kanagawa and it is where i practice so i'm not one of these glory boys who just supports manchester united because they're good - it's because they're local.

the standard of kendo in kanagawa dropped a bit when i started so i have to work hard to get it back up to its previous level.

i think koyama-senshu is the only local guy from kanagawa-ken. if i'm not mistaken he went to tokai sagami kou, the same highschool miyazaki brothers went to. but then again, a bulk of the competitors are representing their adopted prefectures instead of their home prefectures.

i think it will be ando-harada final. that is, if the latter beats mori-senshu. winner of that match will meet tazaki-senshu...

on a side note, plenty of tsuki scored this time around, 4 of them so far. ando's got 1 already.

reg

tazaki lost 2nd round =\ chikamoto won fairly quickly in the 3rd round. i still think it's ando-harada. but chikamoto-san is on fire! he might beat harada again like last year on the way to the final =P

edit: ando lost to a tsuki in encho. there goes my predictions. lame..
