Anyone go to this years uni games? What did you think?

I thought it was a great day and was really impressed with the amount of kendoka in the kyu grades - some were really really good in shiai as well.

I never been to Aust Nationals before, but would anyone who's been to both comment on the difference in skill in the kyu grades? (I figured in theory the uni games would be a decent interstate warm up before nationals next year?)

I wasn't there but I heard that the University of New South Wales kendo team put up a good fight!

The uni games are held once a year and include pretty much all sports....As far as I know its the only time other than nationals that we really get to compete against kendoka from other states (it might be different in the eastern states?)...definatley a good way to spend a day..

Yeh, Uni of NSW were really impressive, especially Ohtusuka (he came 2nd in the kyu grade individuals)..they also came 3rd in both the kyu and open teams as well as a third in the Dan individuals....I'm kinda hangin out till nationals and uni games next year to get to practice with them again (David Forester was a really nice guy and offered me some good advice)..

Although I'm biased, I'm pretty happy to see WA doing so well (first in both individuals and the dan teams)

Yep, I'll second that...we had a few laughs after the shiai was over, a nice guy (although he gave me a hiding in jigeiko afterwards):ko: ...

had an excellent experience at my first and last uni games. the quality of the kendoka, particularly at the kyu-level from unsw was amazing.

was a bit disheartened watching goshinkai's 5-dan sensei rip through all the kids in the open events, but was very awe-inspired with his skill.

on a side note, I have also discovered a born-again love for perth beers.

Well done to my guys at University of Melbourne for winning the kyu teams event and coming third overall. Also Melbourne Uni took out the overall title across all sports - woohoo!

I think Australian kendo has incredible depth of talent right now at kyu grade level. I didnt go to Uni games but last Aus c'ships the standard of the kyu comp was awesome. Really more like 1-3 dan. This is obviously a product of the strict following of 6-1 kyu pathway for all kendoka in Aus. It is very satisfying to know that any kendoka we train can go overseas and be performing at least at the level of their counterparts in other countries, and often at a higher level.

I must say that our senseis in Australia have done a hell of a job in guiding us along the journey.

Looking forward to doing keiko at your dojo when I visit my family in February.

Firstly, Sorry to say, Yoshiki is unable to be in the nationals (even though I do hope I can compete with him at the national level)... most of the people whom went to the AUG from Melbourne are overseas student.. thus unable to enter the nationals.. meaning.. if you havent been to the nationals before.. you dont know what is out there... even for Kyu grade levels.

Secondly, be careful what you guys say about Chiaki.

Well, there's no need to be careful as niether have said anything, other than to ask a fair question (and she seemed like a nice girl)..no harm done?..It's a pity Yoshiki or any of the other guys & girls we met at AUG won't be at nationals, it'd would have been nice to see them again (and compete of course).

hehehehe you right, i dont know whats out there:) ; looking forward to finding out though, it should be fun

Sorry Stephen.. I was more of refering to Andoru....
becareful of what you say... dont even think of any ideas... Alvin, when I answered Stephen's question, I did not know whether she is attached or not (well I do know now). I answered his question in good faith. It's not my business in any case, that's why my answer was focussed more on the first part, that she trains at UMKC.

Don't be too sensitive mate. :)

Chiakia trains at UMKC and pops up often over the road where her boyfriend trains (and very effectively too!)

On another note, Nick from Fudoshin was just training over here (Perth) recently, and after chatting to him, I'll definatley be comming to visit/train at Fudoshin next time i'm in Melb....hope to cya there:)

Stephen
12th November 2004, 04:52 PM
Yep, I'll still be a kyu grade (although if my sensei thinks I'm ready I'll attempt to go for my Shodan at the grading there....then I'll finally be able to play with the big boys/girls...well, the year after at least:) )

Will you be heading down to ACT? (It'll be great to put faces to names)

Stephen
12th November 2004, 05:06 PM
I should add, if i can improve enough to even make it into the open team the year after:-)

Stephen

I don't know what I'm looking forward to more; competing, meeting ppl or watching some great kendo...actually, thats really a no brainer..competing hahaha (although with that said, i've heard so much about so many excellent kendoka, I'm hangin out to watch them - especially Kirby and that Jodan)
