View Full Version : Carbon Shinais and Weight

One thing I don't like about the carbon shinais is the weight factor. The heviest I saw on their list was 490 which is about 20 g off the regulation weight.

This is okay though cause I bought it for training economy but the weight still bothers me. It is just too light so when you pick up a normal shinai its not a great difference but I still do notice.

Anybody got any ideas how to increase the weight?

I was planning on getting some putty or plastacine and wrapping it up in plastic then placing it into the hilt so it won't move around but will increase the weight.

Would this damage the shinai though?

It should get above regulation weight once you add all the fittings.

Yup, thanks.

but I want it slightly heavier as to be like weight training during practice so that when I use a lighter shinai in shiai it will nice.

I currently have that setup with my bamboo shinais. I use the heavier one in training and the lighter dobari in shiai.

While it might not be true in your case, most people I know with carbon fibre shinais tends to hit too hard and making it heavier will only amplify the problem. (That is, if you have the same tendency).
Do suburi with a suburito instead, if you want weight training, IMO.
