The second pic is taken from F.J. Norman's pic (featured in Kendo World Magazine). The third pic is on the backcover of Kendo World vol 1 #2 I believe.

It's a tsuki.

Yup the shinai is very close to structural collapse.

plz tell me that doesnt happen every day...

In a recent tournament I attacked my opponent, followed through, turned around and managed to place my shinai on her mune (she followed me with the intention to attack while I was turning around). She had so much momentum that my shinai bent, too, with a terrible sound (like "krrrrrtchchchchch"). It wasn't as spectactular as in the picture but I think the monouchi had for a short time an angle close to 90 degrees with the rest of the shinai. Now it has a more katana-like shape and I think I cannot use it anymore.

Regards,

Stefan

originaly posted by stefan, Now it has a more katana-like shape and I think I cannot use it anymore.

aah why not, that would look more realistic with a bent shinai, it is bamboo after all the make scafoldings out of it for goodnes sake,

but that pic of the tsuki i would loved to have been the guy doing it to him that is some serios attack

little kids like that are in my dojang. I find it so cute when they are in their hogu and can hardly walk in it. They also trip alot during spariing and they can hardly hit very hard but i find them very cute.

This picture shows why we should let go after tsuki...unless your training in dangerous police dojo. But wow...that cost him a shinai...gave the photographer a bit of cash though..haha

Actually that 'tsuki' pic is showing the worst example of tsuki.

No pull back, or tsuki from very very close maai,
left had way off center.

Seems like the pic came from some Hokushin dojo, but they should be
embarassed to post such a pic

O_O I agree. It's rather disturbing.... Can't help but imagine the expression on the face of the guy that got tsuki-ed :ko:

As for the first pic..... X3 Absolute cuteness~!

I don't think this is actualy an intentional tsuki. From the position of the arms of the attacker I think he went for kote, but kensen of his shinai got kind of accidentaly stuck on tsuki-bu of his opponent.

on the first pic. i watched the lil kids practice @ my dojang in korea and there are a lot of kids like that. the shinai is way too big for them but those kids grow up to be the best in the world. i know someone in korea that is my age and is better than the seniors @ the dojang.

so did the shinai break in the 3rd pic?

It is the infamous Cobra dojo of Houston !!

YIKES!
I spent 5 minutes looking at that tsuki pic to figure out if it was photoshopped....

My shinai could never bend like that.. i just KNOW
When i've tried tsuki on a wall or something it barely bends.....
I gotta oil my shinai again.. bigtime!

The guy doing the tsuki is Paul Anderson, from the Houston Budokan (Chiba dojo).

And by the way, yes, it IS real. It was a VERY lucky picture. The shinai broke completely just a fraction of a second later.

Cobra dojo? :confused2 Ohh yes. You never seen Karate Kid?
'Yes sensei! I will hurt him!!!"
Whole concept of this Cobra dojo in Houston is just sooo off-stream of kendo world.
All non-japanese senseis(?!) have no clue of what goes on in kendo.
It is soo shame that young 7-dan sensei (late30's to early 40) from Japan can not say or advice to the ol' coon of Houston:wink:

The guy doing the tsuki is Paul Anderson, from the Houston Budokan (Chiba dojo).Sounds like dojo mate is admitting and bragging about this intentional tsuki.
very very scary
Just FYI Tatsuko, we knew who this clown was, but for sake of Chiba sensei, and very few legit kenshi at houston, we did not mention any names.
Be careful about posting ppl's name on forums.
Now poor Mr Anderson is know for '$%^#%# of tsuki' worldwide

Was it an intentional tsuki?

When you hit tsuki, because you wanted to (as opposed to an idental hit, while trying to do something else) ?

Yes that's what I meant - accidentally hitting the ago while doing something else.

I wasn't bragging about anything. Merely stating facts.

His name and the Chiba symbol are right there on his zekken anyway.

I won't respond to anything else you posted in that message.

What makes you say he's a clown??

I don't see what the big deal about this Tsuki is...

I'd love to be involved with waza like that!! either dishing it out or on the recieving end.

For god's sake this is Kendo not Figure Skating...

Talking about tsuki, this happened in the All Brazil Taikai 2004, in July past:

http://www.bunkyokendo.com/fotos/Campeonato%20Brasileiro%202004/br2004_22.jpg

Ouch, missing tsuki. Hit next to the shoulder of the kenshi (right side of the Do mune, in the keikogi) and literally exploded into millions of splinters. Hurted just to look at.
