I refuse to let this piece of cyber real estate go to waste.

OK, not including martial arts, what sport do you consider to be the closest to kendo and why?
Also, what type of sport do you consider to be the best preparation for kendo.

I always find myself relating whatever sport I am doing to kendo. My favourite is pool or snooker. Hardly aerobic, but I like hitting those balls sweetly. Reminds me of scoring a good point in kendo.

Would certainly help the cauliflower ear.

I follow Rugby League more closely than Union. Players I'd love to see try their hand at kendo would be Peter Sterling (even now in middle age), Billy Slater, Karmichael Hunt (love the step), Matt Utai (imagine being tsukied!), Sonny Bill Williams and the rest of the Canterbury Bulldogs lineup.

Kiai golf has been well documented.

A friend of mine does tennis and tells me that he finds it really helps his kendo, something about how it strengthens their leg muscles alot, unfortunatly, he told me it does not help at all with his upperbody, I beleive he said that he uses different muscles. Hope it helps.

Snooker (http://www.worldsnooker.com/)

Even better is billiards, but I am hopeless at billiards so I don't play it much.
The best billiards player of all time was the great Australian Walter Lindrum (http://www.eaba.co.uk/articles/walterLindrum/walterLindrumProfile.html) . He still holds the record for the fastest billiards century (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/gwr5/content_pages/record.asp?recordid=45571) (just 46 seconds). Now there's a man who should have played kendo.

I find running helps my kendo. It improves my cardiovascular endurance and my ability to focus. I think about kendo and iaido while running. I don’t mind running with other people as it makes the activity more social I guess. However, i do enjoy going for a run on my own, in my own time, trying to better my distance with every run while trying to maintain a constant speed. I don’t run with headphones on as I like to take in all that is going on around me. It is very therapeutic and the endorphin high lasts quite a while.

I've got a mate who competes in 800m events and runs constantly. I remember that he told me he likes doing sums in his head while running. He's the fastest runner I've ever met and the fastest at doing sums too (he's a punter too which helps).

Look an the bottom of the page and you will see " code is off". This means you can't post images in this section. Try one of the multimedia sections. You will see an image icon in the tools when you reply, or you can simple wrap the URL of the image in [IMG] tags. If you are using your own images you have to get them hosted somewhere first. I can't suggest anywhere in particular.

*Gg* so this is the most off the topic thread , eh ? :)

hm well race-bike helps you with your cardio and your leg muscles, i also go to the gym, helps al the body muscles, and is in some way similar to kendo, you have to concentrate on what you are doing, and what you are dooing, is repetition... also found "downhill" ( http://www3.mtb-news.de/fotos/data/506/19673Downhill_2004_005.jpg for exaomple)
which i do since 2 years now, to be of some advance, i think you could say you need a lot of zanshin there... constant and fast change of terrain and so you have to quickly react :) and it is fun *Ggg*

My father is a snooker fan. He is very good and is considered as a perfect opponent by many people as he is friendly abd offers advice all the time. For a time he took a break from working and some of my friends would come to my house to play snooker with him.
