Howdy,
Sorry to bother, but my terminolgy and memory are always working a little slow. Because of a recent accident I had to return home from Japan. So, I haven't been at a practice for about 3 weeks and I'm starting to forget some things (left my notebook in my room).

When doing Jogenburi (did I spell is write and what"s the Kanji)
Mae - step forward
Ato - step Back
? followed by mae/ato - 4 steps forward/back (3 or 4)

? - When you make the big cut finishing just above the ground
(stepping forward)

Next Sune - every time you do Hasso unless the say ? first then it"s big.

Whats the name for the cut across the waste for do
The name of the upward motion cut (like a kendo kesa giri)

I know Furiaeishi, Men, etc. just some of the term. I always forget.

Also, the names of the 8 kata (not ipponme, but the japanese names).

Sorry to bother, just wishing to do a little studing while away
Michael Castellani

P.S. Sorry for the lack of clarity and feel free to email me off forum if you wish.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear that your stay in Japan has ended prematurely. :(

As for terminology, go to Naginata Jibiki (http://www.scnf.org/jibiki.html), the dictonary of Naginata terms at the SCNF ([US] Southern California Naginata Federation) web site.

If you still cannot find terms there, just repost your inquiries, and I am sure that someone will be able to help you here.

Regards,

Oh nooooooooo! :( That's really really too bad. I hope it wasn't kendo/naginata related and that it's not too bad and that you are on your way to a speedy recovery!

As mentioned, the dictionary over at the SCNF site is really good but I'm going to take some of the guess work for you and match the words up! It'll be like a mini-exercise for me too :)

Ato - step Back
Those are correct!

I believe it's ayumiashi.

Sounds like furiage-sune-uchi to me? I think it's the only strike where you end up just above ground.

Next Sune - every time you do Hasso unless the say ? first then it"s big.
Mmm I can't think of it. The only thing I can think of is soku-men?

Whats the name for the cut across the waste for do
do-uchi? From waki-game. I like do-uchi :D

The name of the upward motion cut (like a kendo kesa giri)
I'm going to guess furikaeshi. I haven't learnt it yet (much to my pouty dismay).

Also, the names of the 8 kata (not ipponme, but the japanese names).

They have different names other than ipponme etc? If they do, I don't know them and I've looked around to find em. Nada.
