Hello Everyone,

Just a heads up. The Annual Vancouver Kendo Taikai is soon approaching. Here's some info:

Saturday, January 22nd, 2005
Location: Capilano College in North Vancouver

I have sent out invitations to all dojos on the CKF, PNKF, SCKF, and Hawaii, and Alaska websites. I wanted to send out some to the NCKF, but there are no addresses on the website. If any of you are from NCKF, and want entry forms sent to your dojo's sensei, please send me a message! We are holding this shiai at a larger location, and are hoping that we will have more participants. The categories for this taikai are arranged by age, so for some of you, you will get the chance to fight different people than you're used to.

There is a really nice hotel located very close to the location, and we were able to get excellent rates!! For more info, please post a message!

Here are the categories. They are arranged by age, so your rank doesn't really matter here. It is an advantage for some, and an dis-advantage for others, but it's the way it has always been at our tournaments.

9 years and under
10-12 years
13-15 years
16-20 years
21-30 years
31-40 years
41 and over years
Women's
Junior Team
Senior Team
*There will be no dojo team again this year.

There is an excellent list of last years winners on the US Kendo website: http://www.kendo-usa.org/results/vancouver_2004.htm

PS-Jamie, I don't know if you'd be interested in our club...us girls are pretty scary....

1 more question when does the monday practice start ?

moocow65
24th November 2004, 08:54 AM
21-30 age group. That's Tenken, Tenken's brother, and Mr.Kurukuru. Plus all the tough guys from Canada. Looks like it's gonna be a really tough tournament for me. So what are we gonna do Ms.Kendo before and after the tournament? Wasabi ice cream??? Hmm.. maybe curry ice cream this time. Hahahah.

ms.kendo
24th November 2004, 10:06 AM
Issac...I'm sure you will be able to compete in the taikai. Just keep practicing hard. Don't worry. Hayashi-sensei will usually let you know if he wants you to be in the tournament. I will let him know you are interested.
As far as Monday practices, we're still in the process of confirming the place. But if all goes well, it looks like we should be able to practice from next Monday! I will e-mail all club members as soon as it is decided. See you @ practice on Friday!

MOOOOOOCOW~!!!!! so you guys are coming for sure? All of you? what are you going to do about Steveston?! Let me know what you decide. Us Vancouver'ers are going to be very busy probably before the taikai...so I'm hoping you guys can stay a bit after the tournament. Most likely the morning of the tournament, i'm going to be in and out of the house running to and from the gym, but it's really close to my house...i.e....it's in the mountains! Maybe we can work something out, if you guys are really coming, so that you can take my car...and maybe hang with my mom?!?! haha...
Make sure that you get an application form. There should've been one sent to you guys through the address that was on the SCKF site. If you don't get it within the week...let me know, ASAP! I'm going to be away for a month, so if you don't get it, then...you're kinda screwed, and I won't be here to help. All applications are due January 1st!

PS-OMG! you guys have to try the HEDGEHOG ICE CREAM!! I'm SOO addicted now!

1 question out of curiousity....
Is Mako ur sister ? You guys look so alike each other..and with
the same last name....
And..Is Hayashi Sensei related to your guys?
BTW...I never seen Hayashi Sensei smile or anything..>.<...
-_-''.....I m kindda of scared if i want to talk to him ...

Neil Gendzwill

I have no idea how you could say that. Mako and Ms. Kendo look nothing alike. For one thing, Mako's about 1/2" taller.

Nope.

The Vancouver Tournament is in January, and the Steveston tournament is in Febuary. Both tournaments however are located in the Greater Vancouver area....maybe that's why you're confused.

Good lord, are the divisions only set by age and there are no minimum experience requirements? Is there possibly a general understanding out West that, for instance, a relative newcomer might be best advised not to enter the 31-40yr old division?

Maybe I'll just come watch this year...

Ms. Kendo... Who are you?????? From what I have hear from Issac and everyone else... i have deduced that you are Hayashi Yumiko(unless there is some other person same size as Mako, looks like Mako that goes to our dojo that i don't know/havn't met yet...)... I can't say for sure tho...

Ms. Kendo, If you guys are going to La Casa Gelato (place with 208 flavors or sumthin like that) PLZ TAKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!(I always wanted to try out their rice ice cream...)

As for the vancouver taikai, Lloyd, I hope to see you there (If you don't remember me than it's fine...) Richard, If you see this post, I'll see you there.

Ah yes... For the taikai prep... Once January turns around, VKC will be going into Taikai prep as fast as possible I take it.

Lloyd, As to who/which dojos will come, Ms. Kendo has sent out the invitations to CKF, PNKF, SCKF, and Hawaii, and Alaska. That would include all sorts of dojo's from north+south cal, every dojo (hopefully) in the vancouver area. Probably some ppl from Western Canada, Western United States, Up North where Alaska is, Halfway across the Pacific to where Hawaii is. Hope the message is clear.

Is there a KW get together that weekend?
I'm sorry I don't quite get the meaning of this message. Are you saying that a bunch of kendo friends from Kendo World will get together in Vancouver for the VKC 41st annual Taikai?

isi
25th December 2004, 09:19 AM
Yes Kris, I meant something along the lines of:

Is there a subset of those people who both participate on the Kendo World Forums and who are planning on attending the Vancouver Kendo Club's Forty First Annual Tournament that are planning to get together? And if there is something, even something really informal, let me know so I can invite myself along to meet some of you folks.

AkuSokuZan
25th December 2004, 11:22 AM
Thx Isi, that makes it a lot clearer for me.

However, I am not one of those people who know very many people on KW that are going to The 41st VKC Taikai, so I would not know whether or not there would be a major gathering. From what Ms Kendo and Moocow have said, it seems that they might get a couple of friends to go to La Casa Gelato on East Venebles(Is that how you spell it) for ice cream seeing as that is the only place where they serve wasabi and curry ice cream(So, there will probably be a gathering). I'm sorry I can't really answer your question because I don't know excatly who Ms Kendo is (See my previous post). Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I need my ZEKKEN !!!!!Issac, Yes you do need a Zekken, however, I don't think you will get one until next year spring. I don't exactly remember when mako asked me for my Kanji name to put on my zekken but i think it was around spring time (or maybe summer?). Also, a zekken is not necesairy. I participated at my first two, or three taikais without a zekken. All that happened was that I put on two strips of tape. one was K.WU (once they used kanji 鄔(wu in chinese)) and the other one had VAN.BC to tell which club I was from, so don't worry, you don't need one now.

Second, Why the DB? do you brefer the center bulge of the shinai? I find it makes the weight near the centre and that frankly, puts me off balance. I prefer the CF series because the wirght is near the tip.

Is it a junior college? No it's not a junior college, there are people over 20 sumthin yrs old that go there (unless I don't understand what you mean by junior college). I believe you can actually earn a diploma there (not really sure), but most people who go there are people who almost made it into universities (or didn't) and are in the two year transfer program to bring their marks up...

Hello Everyone! It's nice to see that everyone is excited about the tournament. It makes me very happy...but it seems people are getting a little off topic. I guess that's always what happens on this forum~

Sorry about no more free food, but the college has no kitchen. The mothers need a break this year. They deserve it.

Hope to see everyone there!

you are thinking of the guy from cascade(sp?) and the match between cascade and sunrise. the guy in white and blue doing nito is moocow. I was fukusho for my team and i did eat crow twice in team. once to d.hayashi(one zero, but i got him back later in the kohaku-sen) and then to MEAN DEAN ARA one-zeroe(after he got a kote on me early i had to play hit and run, his kote was really nice!).
