hi all, i have graded up to 2nd kyu and am looking towards ikkyu, can anyone tell me what difference is there in the grading (obviously you have to be better at kendo). i think you only have to do kata up to sanbonnme as in 2nd kyu. but you also have jigeiko. can anyone give me any pointers?? plse

Hi, always best check with your sensei (as i believe it can vary slightly in different regions etc) - I think my Ikkyu exam consisted of shiai geiko and kata as well as Ichkomigeiko and kakarigeiko(sp?)...main points as always, strike with ki-ken-tai-ichi, positive attck and possibly at least one yuko datotsu (in shiaigeiko) - good luck:) ..btw, a cool sight with heaps of grading info is http://www.auskf.info/mainpages/study_guide.htm

Hi,
As I understand it, the requirements for grading at Ikkyu in the UK are:
Kata to Sanbonme
Kirikaeshi
Jigeiko
Of course, within those are lost of little 'sub' requirements like good ki ken tai ichi, posture, and everything they would expect to see in your kendo for ikkyu grade
Stephen is definitely right, talk to you sensei about what is required, especially as he/she will know your Kendo well and will be able to help you work on any weaknesses in your Kendo that would need to be remedied before you grade
If the grading falls the day after a seminar, it is also best if you attend the seminar as well

2 Jigeiko matchs , make sure you get at least one point in those matchs.

My advice is - look and behave like a sho dan.

Hey il be going for ikkyu too in 2 months..dang..like finally swimming around the deep end of a pool. Then when get dan..it is the ocean. I better start going to kata training :) I noticed that 3rd kyu grading was phyically tough, more so than 2nd kyu, wonder how it's like for ikkyu ?
