What do you really want to do in your future ? I'd like to become a computer programmer because I like programming languages very much. How about you? And what is your motivation ?

Unfortuntely, most of my "future" is going on now and I ended up doing something I do not want to do. If I want to change I'd have to go back to school and get my MBA. Since I loathe school now, not likely. But at the end of the day, the dream of becoming a Pro surfer still itches at me; too bad I just dont have those skills.

ive chosen the path of a ninja assassin. im motivated by greed and underlying feud with the samurai family who outcasted my father and caused us to lead a shadowy life of stealth and death, in which my father taught me all the suiper secret ninja skills.

And what is your motivation ?Take it from a 43 yr old who started in FORTRAN-77 (paper tapes, even): take the cabinetmaking class instead. Technology pays well but can be very unsatisfying. By the time you hit the market, the jobs will be mostly offshore in India and China.

My father used to tell me the same thing when i would help him insert punch cards and watch these monster printers print on greenbar paper....ah, memories.
So i took finance and hate it just as much as he hates IT.

If you can accept being poor and the government blaming us for not solving the world's problems with today's youth, but you can find enjoyment from working and helping kids, why not be a teacher?
Highly rewarding if you can you filter out all the crap that can be thrown your way. And if you budget right, get your summers off, although just having summers off isn't a good reason to be a teacher or you'll be miserable.
(I know this doesn't necessarily apply to other countries, just the US perspective.)

Today was university day in my school. It has left me feeling a tad depressed as I confirmed that I really don't want to do anything. Most of the jobs I want do not, shall we say, make loads of money. Volunteer work does not pay very well and I'd starve with it. It's awful because everyone is counting on me getting a highly paid office job or something like that. My dream is to marry a rich person (hopefully blind so looks are not relevant) and spend my day working for Amnesty International and others. Or (perhaps more unlikely) become a Kendo teacher in Japan. The joy of doing kendo daily will probably offset the financial tightness.

then you probably want to be a district attorney/crown prosecutor/procurator instead. The title varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but the pay would most likely be pretty underwhelming.

Just my two cents. but if you dislike what your doing, school could suck but still be a means to a better end - I went through the same thing and as much as I dreaded the thought of school again, after my first year back its not as bad as i thought:) ..much to my family, friends and workmates horror, I gave up a secure and financialy rewarding career in business managment as I figured no matter how much money I earned, if I wasnt happy doing it then its not worth it! - will it pay off?..who knows..but at least I'll be able to say i tried my best:)

Well, i'm a software engineer now, and sometimes I do wonder why I chose this route.. I love computers and programming, but sometimes I wonder whether I did the right thing choosing to do it for a living, instead of just putting it aside as a hobby. The money isn't that great (especially when compared to the hours that you can work, especially since there's no extra $$$ for overtime), and around 80% of the developers in my company now are from either India or mainland China. Its the sign of things to come. I don't really feel secure in my job, because I have this nagging feeling that no matter how good I am at what I do, they (the Management Types) can do the "Mongolian horde" thing, and just hire loads of cheap foreign programmers. Or maybe just outsource it.
I still enjoy my job, but this constant feeling of job insecurity and the general feeling of not being appreciated just sucks.
I say, if you really want to know how its like doing software development for a living instead of a hobby (or as a school subject), try getting some kinda internship, or work on a LONG TERM project (at LEAST a year). Then decide whether you want to get into this line.
Another thing about having your hobby as your job is, YOU DON'T GET TO CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO (alot of the time anyway). If the task given to you at work is just plain boring as heck, you still have to do it. That also might mean (like in my case), that I stopped all the hobby-programming that I used to do, because i'm already so burnt out doing the day-programming at work on stupid modules, that by the time I come back from work, the last thing I want is to look at code.

Your aim should be to get paided to do something you love, but finding that seem to be harder and harder. Many of the computer industrys really suck, take for example the computer games industry, only a few people really get to work for good developers now, mostly every one has to put up with really really long hours, bad pay, and pretty much zero creative control.
I wanted to be a computer animator but the longer I study the subject at university and find out more about the industry, the less I want to go into it. I suppose my aim now has to be to setup something of my own.

Finish my degree (Computer Science MSci), get a job with a big investment bank like GS or Deutche (not in tech, I mean as an entry level analyst) and work in Mergers and Acquisitions (better learn to spell that first). Or something that pays big cash and has me travelling a lot.
Make my millions investing, retire at 35, travel the world, give lots to charity, and get into international millionaire playboy adventures.
And the best part is, you all think I'm kidding :)

Aren't all of us who have been at it more than a couple years? I can't count the number of people I work with (including myself) who used to mess with computers as a hobby and now the most technical thing they ever do on a computer outside of work is web surf. When I got into it (> 10 years ago) it was a pretty good job, now with the hours, the bulls**t, the job insecurity, the benefit and pay cuts, and the "burn 'em out and throw 'em away" approach to employee relations most companies employ these days, all compounded by the fact that the job market's tight, so management knows they can pretty much put the screws to you as much as they want because it's hard to get a different job, it's not a very attrative option. When my son said something a couple weeks ago about working for the same company I do, I encouraged him to think about doing something different. A friend of mine said the other day "This is the last f***ing computer job I'll ever have. If they lay me off I'm going to do something different, probably for less money, but it'll be worth it"

Hehe, this is like 8 years ago when I made The Big Decision. I had the choice between either chasing (my near life long dream) of working in the computer industry, or going after my new found love for biology, and do something related to biology (medicine, research, whatever). Or I can go chasing clouds, and go after my other Big Dream of being a pilot for the Air Force (but my quickly deteriorating eyesight put a quick stop to that chase...).
Anyhoo, back to the query. With hindsight, what would I have chosen? It depends on which situation i'm aiming for. :) If I aim for just happiness in general, i'll go for photography, and just be Yet-Another-Poor-Starving-But-Happy photographer.
If I wish to aim for the All-Set-Until-Retirement route, I would have stuck my head in the books, aim to be a government sponsored scholar, and be literally set for life, with a career path fully charted by the .gov.
But of course, we can't go back and change things, we just have to cope with what we have chosen. I guess i'm not all that dissapointed with my choice in this industry, its just that now is perhaps just yet another bad moment for this particular industry i've chosen. But the scary thing is, there are MANY signs that this is not going to end, and is just going to get worse.
So who knows? Perhaps once I get enough money out of the computer industry (or if I start to get stressed enough, whichever comes first), maybe i'll go into photography full-time. :) Or kendo full-time. Hahahahahhaahaha.

If getting an MBA is the way to what you have a passion for then go back to school man, i understand the loathing part but if you can afford it you owe it to yourself to make a come back :) , stop procrastinating dude, an MBA lasts like what,2 years if i'm not mistaken, help yourself with that kendo spirit and go on the offensive.
Best of luck
I'm in the process of restarting my life, went through many disapointments but i'm motivated to live my dream whatever it takes, if i don't get to my goal ,i'd say that just the journey to it had its own rewards(i again point to Myamoto sensei's story, i like to think that eventhough he died without getting his hachidan,he knew that he succeeded in personifying one of the most important sides of budo which is perseverance). It's all about making the best out of any situation, know your options exploit them the best you can to do what you like.
Just my two cents. but if you dislike what your doing, school could suck but still be a means to a better end - I went through the same thing and as much as I dreaded the thought of school again, after my first year back its not as bad as i thought ..much to my family, friends and workmates horror, I gave up a secure and financialy rewarding career in business managment as I figured no matter how much money I earned, if I wasnt happy doing it then its not worth it! - will it pay off?..who knows..but at least I'll be able to say i tried my best
I'm one of those that believe that when you do something you love ,you'll definitely excel at it whatever the odds are.It takes courage to do what you did,More power to you . :)

But I really want to be a pilot, i have done a few flying lessons, and i will be starting again this spring. My Dad died when I was 14. I started off making Ice Cream for a living (what a good Italian boy!!!)... then had a few restaurants, a bakery and an Ice Cream Factory.... Boy was I miserable....!!!
Then I took up Martial Arts (Shorinji Kempo was my first love) and decided that I wanted to go to Japan...
Retrained in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (25 years ago...)... never got to Japan (but had a Japanese girlfriend...). Met my wife, who is from Brazil...
Went to Brazil... we decided to marry and I retrained in Systems Analysis and COBOL Programming... got a job as a Systems Analyst in an Insurance Company...
From there... two kids... Business Analysis; Business Process Re-Engineering; Organisational Change Management; eBusiness Strategy; Marketing Strategy; Business Intelligence; Customer Relationship Management; Innovation... blah... blah... blahhh....
Best Company I nearly worked for was Enron... great people, interesting proposition... riddled with corruption...
So here I am today... 47 years old, wife, 2 kids and a dog... nice house... reasonable salary... nice car etc... but frankly, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up...!
I am about to relocate to Southern New Jersey... so, yet another change... I guess that has been the only constant in my life...
I had toyed with retraining again in Hypnotherapy / NLP...
I think that I would have really liked to be a Stage Magician, a Comedian, an Actor... or a Bernese Mountain Dog (the closest creature to an angel to walk God's Earth!!!)...
What will be on my tombstone? Well. certainly not: 'I wish I'd spent more time in the office'...! ... Maybe... 'Has the change stopped yet?'
deep neh?

Alternativly, I've been toying with the plan, should I get fed up with the whole thing, I would become a bush-pilot in either Canada,Aus or Africa. (Got my license a few years back, although it has now lapsed)
