Been thinking about this for a few days... How would you go about naming a new dojo? :confused2

By example. Look up the names of other dojo and look for trends. Then use your own imagination to create a new one (or perhaps borrow an old one with some sort of variation or twist). I have done this a couple of times. PM for examples.

That's a geek solution. :D

YMMV,

I like to keep it simple: [location name][activity] Club

1. Think about a new dojo name.
2. Write down ideas.
3. Exchange ideas.
4. Pick dojo name.
5. Fight.
6. Insult.
7. Deal with rising third-party coup.
8. Quit and start a new dojo.
9. Start at step 1.

To expand on Hai Hai's point 1, you may want to take existing Japanese words and combine them with other fictional words so they become meaningless, yet highly cool sounding. If anyone questions the meaning of your new words shrug and blame someone else.

I've always been fond of "hanshi" Steve Kaufman's "dojo no hebi".

When we started London City Club our (Japanese) sensei was almost adamant about not using a Japanese name...and as it's a dojo in London, ,mainly for people working in the City, the name wasn't too hard to figure out!

I notice here you either have a japanese name (Yorimitsu No Dojo), a innovative english name (Karate Unlimited), a family name, or owners name ([John] Crest's TaeKwonDo), or a city/area name with activity (Melbourne TaeKwonDo, Brevard County Kendo). Stuff like that.

Been thinking about this for a few days... How would you go about naming a new dojo? :confused2I would prefer to make it more personal, unless it is a large group trying to start a club. Location and activity is fine but I would come up with something a bit more creative. Is there a main sensei who will head the dojo?

Something basic with a touch of Japanese....something like "Middlesbrough Kendo Kai".

If all else fails, try "Flynn's Krazy Kendo Klub Killing Ku". You would be surprised how many people would walk into the school just to see what it is. You can call it FKKKK, for short.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Cheers

I think because Kendo is already uses Japanese terms(kirikaeshi, uchikomi, etc) a japanese name for a dojo might scare people away because it might be too japanese. The instructors are teaching and want to attact people, an american name is a lot more relaxing to visit than a really long japanese name that might sound cool.

Thanks for the link, it explains a few things! And yeah i suppose maybe not having a japanese name for a dojo in orther parts of the world makes it easyer for people to know who you are, and what you are about. But also a japanese name as a nice ring to it don't you think?

That is true. It makes it seem more legitimate.
You can do some East-West mix like "Igirisu no Hentai Kendo Dojo".

just make sure you don't use any animals or colors in the name, examples include:

Black Dragon Kendo Dojo
Zebra-Kai Kendo Dojo
White Tiger Dojo
Pink Flamingo Kendo Club

etc, etc

Animals and dojo names just don't go together.

You are wrong. Cobra Kai is the best dojo name ever.

MERCY IS FOR THE WEAK!!!

Sorry, had to...

I second the suggestion of naming it the LOCATION Kendo Club, or something to that effect. When people do a web search, should there be a web page, or phone book or anything, they will type or look up the city name, and then your club will magically pop up. It's quite convenient for things like that.

You can do some East-West mix like "Igirisu no Hentai Kendo Dojo".I like that one, it's subtle and elegant.

Yeah I know, The reason I asked was due to the fact I never knew how you would go about naming one in the first place. Anyway now I know for the future  Yeah I would never think about wanting to rename our dojo, the name is too good!
