hello fellow kendokaz:
I'm new to kendo. it's only been months since i started learning kendo and the thing is i'm doing the trying with my kyokushin sensei. i know the basics due to a camp i took during the winter with kyoshi John Howell.
My question is will it affect my basic skills if i trained by my own?
my kyokushin sensei doesn't admit or say that he knows kendo, but he also knows some basics.
So should i go to japan? which i can't totally afford or should i go to a nearby country and gain my first garde in kendo.
please i need help :)

I would say that practicing on your own wouldn't be too bad, considering you know the basics. But stick to the basics you know, do try anything too new, otherwise you'll most likely just develope some bad habits. And that will have a very negative affect on your Kendo.
I think traveling to get some formal training in, then testing would be a good idea. But if you havn't been training more than a few monthes I would hold off on going to test, but that's just my opinion. Traveling to practice with new kenshi is a GREAT way to improve your Kendo, though.

Even if you do know the basics, you could still "slip" into an incorrect posture, step, etc.
My suggestion would be to try to find a kendo instructor to give you some instruction and to ensure that you are doing it properly.
I've been doing kendo for almost 10 months, I've watched my sensei make observations to 4th-dan and give them correction. Bear in mind that my sensei never corrects to embarrass, he always does it with the idea that everyone in the dojo will benefit from his observation.

i'm sorry i was a little bit busy the past few days and thats way i could't reply.
joey think the things you said about finding a kendo sensei is a little hard for me to find, because there is noooooooo kendo dojo in kuwait.
do you think that if i went to the japanese embsy i might find some kendokas there?
thank you again

There might not be kendo in Kuwait, but there is kendo in your region in the following countries:
- Iran, as you can read in Alex Bennett's story on the KW home page.
- Jordan, their kendo is organized within the Jordan Judo Federation.

I can imagine political sensitivities in the relationships between Kuwait and some of the above mentioned countries, but most of the time this doesn't matter very much in kendo. Anyway these options are more close by than Japan, so traveling there for instruction might be a more realistic goal for you.

Try advertising locally as well as going to the embassy, you may find tourists or visiting workers would be able to come down and practise. If not you may also find others willing to come down and practise with you, its worth a try anyway. Good luck.

Hello dear Gonzo kenshi,
thanks for the frank comments given below, YES you are right, the political or borders does not effect a game & its players till there are playing for the game,
your words are appreciated very much,
:)

Is the story literally on the website? I haven't been able to find it :(
