I stumbled across this video today. Does anyone have any idea what the heck this is?!
I'm fairly sure it isn't legal in Kendo, but its interesting nonetheless.

Wow, I've never seen kama(sickle) and chain vs. nito. That's cool!
I like watching these sorta matches, I've seen jukendo(bayonet) vs. kendo, naginata vs. kendo but never this...
where did you find it?

I think this was the 1998 Paris Taikai. If it is, the nito player is Toda-sensei.

I did a search for "Nito Ryu Kendo" (cause I think it looks quite interesting, even though I'll only get to try in in 6+ years :D ) and a page full of different videos came up...that being one of them.
Heres the link,

Amazing what google searches will turn up sometimes, eh?

Oh my...that would be a sight!
I can picture it now, the Kendoka uses his Shinai to block the arrow, which ends up stuck in the shinai for the rest of the fight. And the "rest of the fight" includes the Kendoka beating the absolute crap out of the armorless Kyudo practitioner. Heh.
Also, anyone else find that video of the two bogu-less guys and the chain interesting? I didn't catch what was going on at first, but on second glance you can see that one of them has a small pad on his head, and the one swinging the chain hits him in the *exact* spot with his swing. Amazing!

Nifty goodness! Was that a kusari-gama? Amazing shit. What's to stop that ball-and-chain from curling around your men and taking out the unprotected back of your head, I have no idea. Wonderful skill.

Ive seen that in the flesh (NYC). Probably the guy wielding the kusari-gama wasnt very good ... but it wasnt spectacular at all. The kendoka showed him who the daddy was.
Araki-ryu was demo-ed at the Paris Taikai 2 years back ... the kusari-gama waza shown there was ** totally ** amazing.
Brief info on Araki-ryu:

The nito demo (the bottom clip) is a pretty fair illustration of how not to play a nito opponent. There's this tendency to get sucked in too close (looking for that tip to tip maai). Then the shoto takes care of your shinai and you get clocked.

Yeah, unless you are Samurai Jack trying to get past three blind archers I don't think that's too likely to happen. :)

Yeah! That was pretty cool. But I mean, where else would the thing land? Ouch! Let's not even think about it. :)

I don't watch kendo clips very often, but this is great! Never seen that... The website is quite interesting and there's some comments on 98 Paris taikai...

I don't think Benkei did too well in a similar situation some years back :)

Who is the man with the kusari gama? One of the reasons I began kendou was in hopes of someday studying kusari gama... No one around here studies it, despite the fact that one of the koryu of this very city is a kusari gama koryu (according to www.koryu.com, for you fact checkers out there, that would be Alex).
