I hadn't noticed this before, but theres a link to a Japanese Kendo game on E-bogu.com

Check it out! The Kiai's get a bit annoying, but other than that I like it!

Also, I have yet to score a succesful Kote. :( Anyone figure that out yet?

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! You all know the old hamster dance website, and how it infects your mind, and how you can't get it out of your head, and how it spread like a plague, and it annoys all after about 30 seconds...

Don't go to the Kendo game!!! Bwah bbwah bwah, you will forever hear kiai, bwah bwah bwah!!! I can't get that sound out of my head!

The first or second kiai is surprizing and cool. The third or fourth are ok, and after that, they are stuck in my brain and won't get out!

Hmmm
I already tried this game before. The graphics are making me.... sick. What is this? A shinai or a long toothpick? I dream of the day when there will be a real 3D kendo game.... soo cool.. Does someone here work in video games?

Phorest

I don't...but I think it would be really cool to see a competition fencing/kendo game come out. That would add more depth to it, and if they were to put in tournaments, the olympics, national championships, etc. it would be really cool.

Heres how I see it. You start off as a guy/girl in sweats and a tshirt for the "training mode" at the beginning, then you work your way up into bogu after you're done training (learning the controls). After that you compete in local tournaments, and have to earn a certain number of points in those to advance to the bigger ones. Eventually you get to state-wide and soon national championships. Then if you do well enough in nationals you can go to the olympics.

It could work the same way for fencing.

Just a thought...I'm bored! :D

Mingshi, I don't work in video games, but I have helped make a few mods. There is a guy I know working on a Kendo mod for a game called Morrowind, and I modeled and textured a shinai, bokuto, and katana for him. They are in early stages right now, but they still look pretty decent. I just need to improve the textures.

Hi all,

I am a total newby to this forum and to Kendo.

I do however, play games for a living and have not long finished Sword of the Samuri, ( I don't know if it is in the shops in europe as I don't buy them,he he.) I would give this game 8 / 10 as it has a week story line, limited Dojo's and a few other nigly bits but it was a very enjoyable and game to play, nice moves, beautiful kills and loads of blood.

Try it, you will like it.

Just to add, the three Dojo's where.

tatsumi ryu
shindo munen ryu
and the one to go, .... itto ryu, can't remember the first bit but it dosn't matter.

Don't quote me on this but I am sure they had something to do with the samuri's early days and something to do with Kendo but I'm a newby so what do I Know...... didally squat probably, lol.

"Sword of the Samuri", "8 / 10 as it has a week story line, limited Dojo's and a few other nigly bits but it was a very enjoyable and game to play, nice moves, beautiful kills and loads of blood"

I'd have to disagree. I rented the game over a weekend and played it for all it's worth playing.

While the combat engine is initially seems enjoyable it grows stale quickly. Your repertoire of moves is extremely limited and it shows. Within an hour the game degenerates into a matter of walking around randomly and tapping the same button to kill people.

Supposedly there is a story to it and you’re not the feudal equivalent of a homicidal maniac. That being said, I couldn’t find one. Aside from some dry prologue in the tutorial there’s given no real direction. Perhaps that’s too harsh as you do have some, the games sequences (I refuse to call it a plot) sometimes follow a make-your-own story set of choices. A few characters, when spoken to, offer you a simple. It usually boils down to being with or against them. If you’re with them you go kill someone, if not you kill them. Since it really doesn’t seem to make much of a difference it’s easier to just kill everyone you come across.

The graphics are pretty yawn inspiring, low resolution and repetitive, nothing to talk about. The same goes for the sound and music, completely forgettable. The technical aspect that really stands out is the load-times, long is an understatement.

Soul of the Samurai is a pretty damn average game, not worth your money. Though for most people on this board it’s at least worth a rental. After all you do get to wander around sticking the shiny-pointy thing into people, something that appeals to me. Rating is 6/10 if the subject matter interests you and less if you don’t care.

Addium: The game is for the playstation 2 and is published by Konami. A sequal is reportedly in the works.

I have been saved by technology! For some reason, I don't have the correct Director/Flash plug-in in here so; I heed your warnings not to hear the hiddeous kiai and and witness the jabbing toothpicks.

But it is kind of funny... On wednesday night (when we normally have Kendo practice but it was cancelled, ironically Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers came out that day hmmm..) instead of actual practice I dug up Bushido Blade for the Playstation. I still admire the game for it's innovative play (run away! RUN AWAY!). But I found myself giggling a lot at some of the stuff like; hasso no-kamae with the naginata. Thee-hee.

Anyways. Yes; the world could use a lot more of GOOD realistic Kendo video games cause... well we just need them ok? I like the idea of the graduated training clothes. I've been at this almost a year and I'm STILL in shorts and a t-shirt. At least with a video game bogu would be alot easier to get. But you would still have to do simulated cleaning to prevent simulated bogu-mold. Icky! And of course there would have to be a timed suburi mode. UP DOWN UP DOWN UP DOWN A B UP DOWN UP DOWN UP DOWN A B *pause* Whew! *resume*

That is my favorite fighting game of all time. Realistic one shot kills, and super fast reincarnation to fight again, so the sudden deaths don't create constant reload wait times.

Gotta love it when you take out the persons leg and they are stuck in the pit! :)

hm... haven't tried bushido blade yet... on what platform is it? it looks fun.

I'd like to see a simulation kendo game one day... start with a beginner going to his first practice, buy different kind of equipment (cheap shinai to expensive ones, machine stitch bogu to hand stitch) in a kendo shop (with virtual money), learn new waza depending on points accumulated during practice (a good men-uchi would give you 50 pts), go to tournaments, win money at tournaments, buy better equipment, having different grades, choosing between learning jodan or stay chudan, etc... like The Kendo Sims!

Someday when I'm a highly paid computer animator/artist I'm going to work on a Kendo game...for the PS12, Xbox 3.0 or something.

No, really. :D I do a lot of 3d modeling/animation in my spare time and I'm hoping to study it in college.

There is a kendo game for the Playstation. It is part of the japanese simple 1500 series, and it is called The Kendo. It is horrible, absolutely horrible. But it is good for a laugh. The ideas are good, but the budget and implementation was crap.

Other than that, there is Samurai (aka way of the samurai in the US, developed by acquire) which is surprisingly fun, and has gotten alot of my kendo friends hooked. A special edition with a preview of samurai 2 will be released in Japan soon.

Last is the Kengo series, Kengo 1 was indeed shit; however, Kengo 2 is very cool and features famous kenshi like Musashi. I believe Sasaki Kojiro and maybe Benkei may also be in there, but i am too cheap to buy it, and there is no game rental in Japan.

I would like to say that I am working hard to get into the game industry and a kendo video game is one of my pet projects. I have the control scheme and everything all figured out, I just need to sit down and code a simple A.I. engine to test out my decision making. Then it is on to art and such which I suck at. If I ever get it to stick figure form, I might let other people have a go at it and maybe even plop in art. But this is A LONG TIME AWAY.

Just give me a shout tetsuo!.....in about 4.5 years! Gotta finish college first.

I already have quite a few Kendo related models done in Maya. Not sur how easy that is to port...etc. as I've never delved into the gaming side of things (thought hat is my goal eventually).

Gather around kiddies let me tell you all about a very old game that involved kendo (Begins rocking back and forth in his chair while putting tobacco in his pipe). 'Twas the year 1990, MC Hammer was hitting his stride, the Soviet Union still existed, George Bush was in the White House, the economy was in a recession, the spectre of war in Iraq loomed and a console called the Genesis (that's the Mega Drive for you Europeans and Japanese) had just appeared on the market. In these early days of the "16 bit wars" a company called Electronic Arts put out a game called "Budokan - The Martial Spirit". It was, for all intents and purposes, a "budo simulator". You could choose from different styles of martial arts (including kendo, karate and naginata) and go fight other martial artists (and I use the term loosely). The game was released to mediocre reviews and worse sales (although some people took to playing the game in the two player mode thus making it a precursor to the "Street Fighter 2 Revolution" that would sweep across the gaming community like a fire storm. . . but I digress).

Anyway, the game featured kendo, although I don't think it had anything to do with actual kendo. I never had the misfortune of playing this Electronic Arts piece of garbage but I remain curious about it (apparently there was a jumping move in kendo. . . confusing). Here's a link if anyone wants to buy it or maybe just admire the box art with two kenshis going at it.

Next time I'll tell the story of how Donkey Kong wound up on the Coleco system.

I loved budokan.... you had 4 martial arts to choose from, karate, kendo, bo and nunchakus, and you went up against these guys who were fully armoured and using live weapons eg. real naginata and kusarigama, it was a riot :D

The jumping technique was hilarious.... mash the fire button and he jumps like a rabbit going yahyahyahyahyah!!

Okay, I figured it out. You have to walk down to the bottom of the courtyard.

I got OWNED by the first guy. *sigh* Back to the dojo for some more suburi I guess. :(

On a side note, is it possible to block low in Kendo? Or are we just screwed? This guy keeps sweeping me. Ugh.

HELP HELP~~!!

I downloaded the Dos version of Budokan, and was running it under Windows XP.

Where is the key for a cut??? I can only use the arrow keys for changing Kamae, Esc for menu, and B for functions.

And when I press 2 keys at a time it jumps out from the DOS window! ARggrrr~

Phorest
15th January 2003, 08:31 AM
Easy way:

Go to that site saki posted. Download Budokan ROM for the megadrive, and download the program "Gens" under Emulators.

Gens lets you set everything..what keyboard key does what, window size, etc.

By default the keyboard keys are A S and D for A B and C respectively. (in Gens)

I don't know if this has been mentioned in this topic yet, as I've only glanced through the many replies.
I saw Bushido Blade was mentioned. I think people into Kendo should really check it out, it is more faithful to real combat than most fighting games (you get killed with one hit, the players don't fly or throw balls of fire and energy, many moves are based on moves from kenjutsu and stuff like that).
And, there is a sort of training mode, where the player fights with shinai and bogu. Don't know if this is in bushido blade 1 or 2 though.

Any idea if you can find Bushido Blade as a ROM?

Considering it's a playstation game, probably not. While they do have playstation emulators for the computer (for purchase only?), you would have to find and burn (pirate) a copy of Bushido Blade. Which would require some comuter know-how and alot of bandwidth.

Blah
29th January 2003, 11:59 AM
it's as Gorget said, you can play it but you must have a copy, and the playstation emulator of course. With a bit of research you shouldn't have much trouble to find the emulator on the net, but to get the copy you either need a friend who has the game and burn it for you, or maybe in one of those kind of market stores that sell pirate stuff. hmm don't now how you call them. Here in Brazil it's 'camelô'.
oh yeah, it would be ilegal, but hey, who is going to buy a playstation just to play this game?
