Hi, all. A tentative - TENTATIVE - date for the annual Detroit tournament and testing is Feb. 19 and 20, 2005. I'll add more if I find out otherwise. Also check midwestkendo.com for updates.
Who's coming? I'd love to chat with any and all of you. As some of you know, I'm Charlie Kondek and I practice at Eastern Michigan University, part of the small constellation of dojos in Michigan.

I'll be there. I'll be in the mudansha adult and Team divisions.
I'm Jordan Holmgren and I practice kendo at the Toyoda Center, an aikido dojo that just started their kendo program about a year ago--thanks to the help of Christman sensei and Matsuura sensei from Battle Creek Kendo Kai.

What up, Holmgren? Did you come to the first annual Family Taikai at Eastern last May? If so, we may have met.

:old_man: I'll be in the adult mudansha, though I wonder if there'll be a "seniors division for us older kenshis. This is my second shiai, and I've never been to Detroit's shiai.
My name is Joe Clark, I study at the Miami Valley Kendo Club in Dayton, Ohio. Our dojo is a karate dojo that we rent on Saturday afternoons.

At that time I wasn't even in kendo, so I was not there. You may be thinking of Blaine Feyen from our dojo who participated in that shiai, taking 3rd in mudansha, I believe. Or maybe it was Aaron Robadey, from Battle Creek?

Charlie,
I posted this to Holmgren-san in the "Events" category, but just in case someone misses it, when will you know that the dates for the Shiai are firm?
Thanks.

Well, either of my two sensei(Christman sensei-President of Midwest Kendo Federation or Matsuura sensei, for anyone who knows them) from Battle Creek Kendo Kai will probably be able to give out a definite date by this saturday. Tagawa sensei(Vice President of Midwest Kendo Federation) from Detroit Kendo Dojo is organizing the event, and he will be giving first word to either of my above mentioned sensei.
Word has it, he has really been leaning towards Presidents Day(Feb 19th and 20th) weekend for awhile.

I just saw this on www.midwestkendo.com (http://www.midwestkendo.com) :
"Detroit kendo dojo finalizes the date for the 7th annual tournament, it will be Sunday February 20th, the MWKF promotion exams though will be held on Saturday the 19th."
I guess they finalized it.

I almost posted the above information again. Thanks and hope to see everyone here.

Charlie,
Is the banquet on Sunday evening after the shiai? I know that Ariga-sensei will be attending the banquet, but I do not intend to do so.
As far as I know, we are leaving for Detroit on Sunday morning (very, very early) to arrive in time for shiai. I don't know of anyone who's planning to stay over Saturday night, except for Ariga-sensei.

Charlie,
I'd appreciate it if you pass along my thanks to the Detroit Kendo Club for a great tournament this past weekend. This was my first ever, and I got an opportunity to learn a lot, plus participate in the competition.

Me, too! Hey, I don't remember meeting you. Did you say hi?

I don't know if I did say "Hi", since I wouldn't have recognized you, I spoke to so many shinpan, if only just to greet them and give them the proper respect due. I was in Court F for the initial mudansha competition, then after lunch, I was in the team competition in Court C. If you were watching in Court C, I was the 4th member of my team, I fell down in my first match (and dammit! I dropped my shinai, too!), but continued on for the next 2 rounds after that.

Excellent! Hey, we all fall down sometimes. Or get knocked down. :beard:

Excellent! Hey, we all fall down sometimes. Or get knocked down. :beard: I got knocked down, plus, reaggravated a groin pull that I first got in October, and keep pulling it at least once a week since then. It was just starting to heal up when I made a stupid move in the bleachers and tore it up again. Yesterday's fall had pushed me sideways, which made the pull even worse. I was in so much pain when I fell, I didn't know where I was when I rolled over. All I knew was that I needed to find my shinai and get back into the fight.
:disapp: I refuse to whine about the fact that I got hurt, it's not something my opponent could have known and if he had, and took advantage of it, well, all I can say is "Good on him!" It's part of the game, and I'm willing to look ahead to the next tournament. This tournament was a great teacher and a great blast to attend. Thanks again to all of you at the Detroit dojo for making it a great experience.
