Hello everybody!
There is something that I wanted to do for a long time.
My dream is to go to Japan and spend at least one year of study (mathematics or information science) and kendo training there. Is there anyone who did such a thing?
Did anyone spend more than just a few month in Japan?
What problems did you have? What did you like most? What didn't you like? How did you get enough money for your stay? How much did you spend?
Can anyone give me answers to this and related questions?
Thanks in andvance!!!
Greetings, kirara

Hey, is your name really kirira? When I was in Japan there was this show about a chick called kirira aptly titled "kirira". The adult kirara was played (I looked this up) by Aota Noriko http://www.annie.ne.jp/~kirara/Aota/NAcover.jpg
Yum.
I've only ever been to Japanese Universities to train kendo. Sorry. I know of at least one member here who is currently at uni in Japan.

Are you people blind or something? Read the Bekkasei Manual and the posts about IBU under 'Training in Japan' for god sake!

Gonzo, I think she was referring to a 'normal' university, not the IBU madhouse :)

Haha, power to the bekkasei and long live IBU! PS: Many KW people have studied at IBU and they will probably become the first gaijin hachidan!

Hello, nice to meet you all, I'm new here so hello again. Actually, I myself am willing to go to a japanese university so as to be able to train in Japan. I'm interested in studiyng Mechanics,Technology and things similar to these, so do any of you have any tidbit of knowledge about japanese universities offering adequate scholarships to foreign students? I actually am planning to pay the japanese embassy a visit for orientation but that will be in quite a while from now.
I did one semester at 上智大学 (Sophia) in Tokyo in 03/04 (studying Japanese and history) - my University here (Wollongong) arranged the exchange and gave me a $3,000 scholarship towards living expenses - I was offered a full year but unfortunately my employer didn't think my disapearing for a year was a very good idea. It was expensive - ate up all of my savings.
There was kendo training most afternoons at Sophia but I failed to attend any - too much jodo and iaido available for me off campus..... can't get training from a menkyo kaiden every week here in Wollongong - so living in Japan was the longest period in the last 12 years that I have done absolutely no kendo. The closest I got was to go spectate at the All Japans. As KHwang can testify - I have been back almost a year and my kendo has still not recovered :).
Certainly studying on exchange is a great option if you are currently a student and your uni does these things. Of course its easier for Aussies than for some, we have cheaper uni than many people - most unis that do exchange have some sort of study abroad office you can talk to. Requirement to be sent out from here is to have completed first year with a sufficient average.

I was at Keio for a year. The only way you could study for just a year and yet do the subjects you want is to enter as a bekkasei and have extremely good japanese, both spoken and written, in which case they will allow you to choose a lot of classes as you like. I have to warn you that when I say good japanese, I mean ikkyu level or better. It's a serious academic university so linguaphone japanese or whatever will not get you anywhere. In addition, as it's considered Japan's best private university, you'll need an excellent academic record as well (unless like me your school has a sneaky arrangement).
The kendo at Keio is also pretty awesome. There are four clubs of varying intensity, I was in the official club that represents the university so the training was extremely tough. If you join, your life is dominated by kendo. Missing practices is not an option; if you're not prepared to practice most days of the week then don't think about joining. Unlike the old days, keio is no longer in the very top tier of kendo universities, but even so, the vast majority of members of the club have been doing kendo since they were 6-7. Unless you have trained with people like this before, you will most probably see a type of kendo that you never even knew about.
As you've probably realised from my description, getting into uni in Japan to do anything other than studying Japanese is pretty tough. But if you can manage it, it's a great experience.

For the connaisseurs amongst you I advise www.seifukuheaven.com (http://www.seifukuheaven.com) and since most of them speak no English I also advise to study a lot of Japanese.
