Do you guys think the Steveston Tournement is going to be
as big as the vancouver one?

AkuSokuZan
24th January 2005, 10:58 AM
The Steveston Taikai is probably the most prestigious and largestTaikai in the Vancouver Area. Whereas the VKC taikai was it's 41st, the Steveston as you all know is the 43rd. It's going to be hard, but vancouver will make gold in the team matches for sure.

Steve has more 3rd places than any one I know of. One of my favorite Japanese sensei and D. Taguchi's sensei was the same, Kajiya sensei was in the best 8 and top 4 more than anyone else I know of for years in the All Japan Taikai. Still he never won the championship.

marsten sensei,
your son almost beat suwa from uvic during the team match. Their match ended in a tie. it was one of the best matches i saw all day. Suwa beat katsushi chinen rather quickly and almost beat masukawa sensei, so getting a hikiwake with him and controling the match was no small feat!

always a brides maid...story of my kendo life...2nd twice at nationals..but i have won first before at other tournies...but yes, i prob. own more 2nd and 3rd place trophies than anyone else!

The Vancouver Taikai was awesome(even though I didn't participate) and I'm looking forward to the Steveston tourney, I got owned pretty bad last year but the atmosphere is always good. hehe i'm going this year. I heard that a long ago, there used to be a seafood buffet since most of the Japanese families in the area were fishermen and they donated a portion of their catch for the tournament. I have therefore heard tales of abundant lobster and crab and fish.. damn... That sounds good right now...

Good job MOOOOOOCOOOWWWWW!!! (me and kris were the kids at the entrance who kept saying 'go moocow' and 'good job') You -have- to teach me how to get started with nito. I don't care if I become a jerk like you and pummel people to death when they are on the ground after the judges have called 'yame!', it's sooooo cool!

Lloyd lost in first round! Hahahaha! Kris also lost!

I on the other hand, didn't lose any matches. :D

*drool* the food was awesome, and I think that I ate every single cookie. Hope to see you guys at the U. of Washington taikai in May.

That was a good taikai indeed. Since I was obliged to support my teams i really didn't look at anything else (except the time the moocow started to wail on this guy) and Yang senseis match against the guy with the e-bogu zekken that was not Ariga sensei.

NCKF(woohoo!) vs. Steveston was the most exciting match I saw in a long time. Onitsuka sensei's dou was totally clutch in the tiebreaker and it came "seconds" before the match ended.

Lastly, nice seeing you again Jamie and Honda.

Yeah baby!!! Grounding myself now.. Our team, i thought, was really good for the Juniors. They just steamrolled their way to the finals and won handily. Good job guys!

As for the seniors, they did well. I believe IMHO that a lot of it was nerves and that the players on that NCKF team (especially the younger ones) will grow from that. They've been practicing hard so once they put all the whole package together, i believe that they will do much better come time for the US champs. Those type of pressure packed situations with the crowd cheering you on are the exact reason why i love playing team instead of indivs.

Excuse me by I find the term steamrolled inappropriate when the outcome was decided on points. Bellevue 2 wins, NCKF 2 wins and a tie. Your definition of steamrolled certainly sets outside the norm.

I got a hansoku because my opponent was pressing my shinai to the floor during tsubazariai. When I freed my shinai he would again press my shinai down to the floor. Since this opened me up for a wide open hiki men, and since the shinpan did absolutely NOTHING to stop it, I took matters into my own hands and did a hiki men with my shoto to avoid getting hit. Lo and behold I get a hansoku for doing a waza. Guess I must have not read that rule in the rulebook huh? Am I just supposed to sit there and get hit?

Aside from that, it was a GREAT tournament as usual. I tip my men off to Murao-Sensei and Steveston Dojo for another fantastic job at setting this up.

And Matsuda, I haven't gotten buffer... just fatter. I've been cannibalizing too much at McDonalds.

Your shoto will never count for a point in hikiwaza...but it's not a hansoku.
There may have been something else that the shinpan was looking at.
Maybe someone videotaped that match.
Try asking around.

Well they steamrolled their way "TO" the finals. Before they got to the finals they certainly won by larger margins to the other teams. Damn me and my postings at 5:00am. LOL But, Marsten sensei is correct, it was a close one during the junior team final. I just remember how close the senior match against Steveston and was maybe comparing it to that one in my mind. [QUOTE=moocow65]I got a hansoku because my opponent was pressing my shinai to the floor during tsubazariai.

The hansoku was not for tsubazariai as both of you were guilty of repeated offences. He was also guilty of laying his shinai on your shoulder several times.
Per IKF regulations 2000 (latest edition) article 14 page 6 Datotsu-bui are as Men-bu, Kote-bu, Do-bu and Tsuki-bu. Chapter 3 Prohibited Acts, Article 16 Shiai -sha are prohibited from insulting or acting offensivley against Shinpan-in or opponents. Article 16 Paragraph 7: Doing unfair tsuba-zeriai or ***datotsu*** Article 17 paragraph 7 Doing acts that violate the regulations.
So after repeated incidents in which you struck your opponent in the back of the head and neck multiple times with your shoto and daito we unanimously agreed without any reservation that you warranted a hansoku. The back of the head and neck are no where in the regulations described as yuko-datosu. Further the potential for serious injury existed from your actionsof striking your opponent on his spinal cord. If you were unaware of your behavior then you were obviously out of control. Lastly, the hansoku had the desired result in that the pattern of behavior stopped. I hope the mystery is now solved.

Hey...Is it just me or does Itokazu look even more buffed than he was for 12WKC?

MooCow, what did I ask you when we spoke...

something like...
"Dude?!?! You been lifting or something?!?!"

I thought you looked beefed up as well. That McDonalds diet is really working out for you...I may try it.

about him looking bigger: if you know moocow you know that he is more skilled with the knife and fork than the shoto and daito.

well, i heard from my fellow kendoka that someone did a "baseball bat swing" at his opponent. the opponent then drops his shinai and challenges him to a fight. it's one of those "you wanna piece of me" scenes from the movies. after dropping his shinai, referees called a hansoku on him for dropping his shinai. wish i've seen that.

Well that would have been "interesting" to say the least. Moocows match that I saw was carayyyzy! One person (won't mention who lest I be castrated by the members of a particular federation) tried to shoulder tackle our team member during the team match.

As for being steamrolled, i was by Imanishi from Cascade(PNKF IIRC). Pretty quick. Nice kote he got on me in the end. But I "dekoted" him when he tried to get me out of bounds. lololol :D That match was FUN! I think that was the finals of the bracket I was in for 1-2dan.

Wish I was there to see that. By the way, Lloyd, you album isn't complete with a pic of you running over Andrew in the first five seconds of your individuals... Man, I think I would have wet my hakama if I saw that! :D

Steveston taikai pretty fun.. even if I didn't fight a single time and have now missed approx. 1.5 weeks of kendo due to exams. My offical return to the dojo is on Friday.

Hehe, it's 'election' time in our dojo right now too, and hopefully they won't scold me for missing my individual. :s

some tournaments have tons of competitors to go through. Plus, from what I've inferred so far, this fellow was *AT* the tourney, he just "accidently" missed his match. This implies to me that he doesn't respect the amount of time his instructors have put into the preparing him for the tournament.

listen, nothing personal, but if you decide to ever go to a tournament, any tournament, be PREPARED, and be AWARE. I don't know what the Steveston Tournament is like, but I'm sure that all over the world, tournament organizers don't like people wasting precious time. don't come to DICK around. My two cents. And I won't take it back, anyone who misses their match, should get a hell of a scolding. I'm being mean? For good reason.

I don't want to argue with you captain hansoku. I want to point out some of the things i've seen taht i don't agree with. I didn't really want to have to retaliate like this. You just seemed to need someone to tell you these things. I know it's not my place to tell you this and you need not take it in nor read any of it.

nice doesn't get tournaments finished!!
Yes you are right, however that was not what i was refering to. I was talking about your atitude. Now I do realise that I am just 14 yrs old, but seeing the way you reacted toward R. Dybalski is just wrong. why? because the atitude you were using (of course i'm not implying, i'm just saying it as i interpreted it as) would not help at all. It would only aggrivate the situation. You (once again, my interpretation) are putting him down intentionally by saying that he did everything wrong (which he did), My point was just that your presentation could be quite different.

This is what most people would see. I don't blame you for it. What I don't , however, agree to is that *you*, without knowing the circumstances, are completely willing to judge and criticise. I don't know your age, but I really think someone like you would know better than to do something like that.

I can assure you, I always am. And seeing how dedicated to Kendo Richard is, he is as well.

I don't know what the Steveston Tournament is like, but I'm sure that all over the world, tournament organizers don't like people wasting precious time. don't come to DICK around.

Once again, Richard takes his Kendo journey seriously, which I'm not sure you knew, so it was all right for you to believe that he was "DICKING" around as you say.

My two cents. And I won't take it back, anyone who misses their match, should get a hell of a scolding.
I don't want you to take it back. I realise and accept your opinion, and am not trying to get you to take it back. I'm just trying to tell you that your approach would not bear any fruit.

I'm being mean? For good reason.
I don't quite believe that being mean has any good reason at all. It won't do anything. If you want the person to get a scolding, isn't that wishing something bad on someone? Do you really think that being mean to someone will really change the way they act at a Taikai? Isn't it better to encorage and critique rather that yell and shout at?

unless you're old enough to buy your own booze, I don't care what you say about being nice or being mean, cuz you're just not living in real life yet

well i suppose the fault lies with richard alone, but seeing as it was only his second taikai, i would forgive him for his mistake (and from the looks of it, his sensei did as well...).

Two matches before R.dybalski's match, R.Dybalski decided to go to the changing room to put on him men. However, the first match had only lasted 30 seconds. The second match had a no-show (Man, you should have seen how many people didn't show up for their matches at the steveston taikai. it was sooo different from the last one. At the last one, everyone was quite punctual!!!). By the time R.Dybalski had finished putting on his men, and came back to the ring(?????) his match was just being declared as fusen gachi. A sad sad story...

(He did have team matches, but once again, in tha category, he did not get anymatches because his team won 3 times strait in the first round and lose 3 times strait in the second.) The irony...

As for missing ones match, i was told that it is your fault alone if you are actually at the tournament and miss your match. Our senseis consistently reminded us before the tournament. Circumstances are circumstances but again, i was told that if you are at the tournament, you have to have the day planned out pretty much, especially at a tournament like that where they don't (and can't) wait for you. As for me, I was watching those lineup sheets like a hawk. Tournaments like that where ~300 people are competing require that no noticeable breaks be taken so that the tournament can finish in a day. They can't hold it up just because one guy has an issue.
