Hi folks,
The British kendo Association has published the list of those who are volunteered to help during the KWC in Scotland. And yours trully is one of them. So are some on this forum, plus some who will be in different teams... I was wondering: are some of you going to attend and come to (erm....) sunny Scotland? (Sorry George....).
And if some are, shalll we meet for a wee drink ? :-) And some kendo if possible !

Hey!
Scotland is fine! Who cares about the weather, you'll be inside.
There are only 2 kendo clubs in Scotland: Edinburgh Kendo Club, and Taiseidokai in Glasgow. Only 40 miles apart approx. See if you can get to both. I wont be about immedietly prior to the WKC as we have a gasshuku at a secret highland location.....
Scottish Dojo:

Make sure you visit Edinburgh - its the nicest city in the UK.
KhawMengLee - be sure and tell us where you will keiko while you are in England (London?).
oh - btw - the online volunteer list is BKA people only... there are other helpers from European countries as well.

Well, he's Irish/Scottish and while there are like 2 dojos in Ireland, they don't compete in the WKC. Thats why he told me he's going to be on the Scottish team...I'm pretty sure there is one though, if not I should ask him what team he's going to be on...I don't think its going to be the American team because its probably the hardest to get into next to the Japanese team.

What about Canada, France and Brasil and Korea?
Rei
sminki
21st February 2003, 04:17 AM
According to past WKC performances, the USA kendo team is not necessarily the most difficult to get onto (and hence the elitest/best) outside of Japan.
Out of 11 WKC so far, Japan has won first place in all the team competitions. The follow-ups are: Korea (second place 6 times, third place 2 times), Canada (second place 2 times, third place 5 times), Brazil (second place 2 times, third place 4 times), Taiwan (second place 1 time, third place 4 times), USA (third place 6 times including 2 third place by Hawaii), Okinawa (third place 1 time).
On the individual side, Japan has won first and second place in ALL 11 WKC's and also gotten third place 15 times. The follow-ups are: Korea (third place 6 times) and Taiwan (third place 1 time).
Note that all references to third place are joint third place shared by two parties, so if you bother to count, there are 22 third places in each of teams and individuals over the years.
BTW, who's this kendo kashin character everybody seems to be talking about???
Tato
21st February 2003, 07:30 AM
Hi Sminki, that's prety accurate, but not what I meant.
In fact I belive that to be in the national team you must beat most of the kenshi of your country, that means that competition will depend on two factors, number and quality of the kenshi.
In Europe the biggest kendo federation is the French one, and they are the best ones too (something of the Japanese role but on the Europe theater). So the hardest national team to get into, in Europe, is the French one.

Bronx,
I was being polite. My sensei hapens to be the UK coach, and I personally know some scots who are on the Uk team. So I can confidently tell you that there is no Scotish team. For most individual "sports"/martial arts (let's not start a debate here...), the different nations of the UK compete under the UK flag.
I would agree with Tato. Getting it the French squad is pretty tough. I think the difficulty of geting in the squad depends on the size of the national federation (i.e. more people figting to fit in a squad of 5), so the largest the federation, the most difficult it should be. For example, it will be harder to get in the French aquad (2500-3000 members of the federation) than on the Irish squad (30-50 members...).
Or are you just assuming that since it is the American team, it must be the best one and therfore hard to get in ? ;-)
A.
sminki
21st February 2003, 11:39 PM
tato,
i agree. the number of kenshi competing is certainly a factor in the relative difficulty of getting onto a team. i just wanted to provide everyone with a point of view from the performance side.
i wonder who has the most number of kenshi outside of japan and korea?

Hi Bronx,
There is definately no Scottish team - Kendo in the UK falls under a single Association - the British Kendo Association, which covers Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. In order for there to be a Scottish team, we would need to have a Scottish Association - and we only have 2 dojo in Scotland too!
There is actually an Irish team. I beleive they submitted a team to the last WKC in America, and have put teams forward to the European Championships for the last 2 years, so I suspect they will make an appearance this year too.

So watering holes.... I'll list the 'old faithfuls' you get a lot of new pubs coming and going..... but they will be pretty close to these ones.
Close to the Kelvin Hall there are loads, Infact most pubs in that area of Partick, and up Byres Road are pretty good. Inparticularly The Lismore, Cottiers, Uisge Beatha, Hogshead, 3 Judges, Curlers...to name a very few.
City Centre... Sauchiehall St is pretty good - or the Merchant City - Babbity Bowsters, Blackfriars, The Old Printworks....
If nothing else, that will give you a starting point from which to explore..... enjoy!
Oh, and one last thing - we don't have the same silly liscencing laws as they do down here - pubs are generally open till 12 or 1 :p

I think it will be the repercussions from Team Coaches/managers/ team mates that will stop people drinking - as well as the knowledge that you have worked really hard to fight for your contry, then %^&&% it up by getting pissed the night before and fighting like crap!

Hmm good question. Sensible thing would be to quarantine people for 10 days, which will probably shoot holes in a alot of peoples travelplans!.
I'm not one for overreacting with this, but having people come together from all over the world and then return to their respective contries, would be a very good way of spreading SARS!

This is a damm serious issue, many of the most important kendo teams came from the hot zones, and must be put on quarantine is gouvernements officials and WHO says so.
That's not just a matter of kendo but of straigthfoward responsibilty. It's difficult to me to see kendokas being a potential vector for contagion just for a World champs, it's the other peoples life that is on the line. Quite against kendo spirit et al.
More opinions on the forum?
And, is there already any position on the issue from the federations of your own countries?

What is a Kusarigama?
Raiza
17th June 2003, 11:44 PM
Modified sickle with a long weighted chain attached. Hm, versatile...
http://www.trocadero.com/omiya/items/113993/item113993store.html
And if you dress up like a ninja, you can look like this! http://www.geocities.com/SNYCentral/Cho_Kusarigama.html
I don't think this will be re-enacted at WKC, though :(

kama= sickle
kusari= chain
raiza. you don't need to dress like a ninja to wield a kusarigama. especially if you're a girl. it increases your chances of being beaten on the street.

Next time I will put funny faces behind my non-serious comments! :D :p :bandit: :alien: :rambo:

Hmm, maybe they did it that way so people would be around to see the demo. I wish I could see it. I've never seen kusarigama in a demo, only in ninja movies.
