Who do you think is the greatest kendoka of the last century, whether past or present, living or dead, local or outside your country? I pressume that a lot of Japanese exponents will appear but please feel free to nominate somebody you know or someone you had read from an article or book.
I've been searching the internet for more details about kendo's greatest. But so far there are not enough info about them. NO record of the 9dan, 10dan unlike the AJFK tourney, or WKC(you can use them for reference in nominating). Perhaps, I'll go for Miyazaki for the contemporary exponents, and Moriji Mochida for the all time greats, he was champion for the Emperor cup for a time. Then Junzo Sasamori, read something about him on This is Kendo.
Please state also the reason why you nominated that person.
Thank you for your time......

greatest kendoka of the last century?
I guess its me!! althought I never played kendo before the year 2000.
seriously, I dont think we can really say that there was a greatest kendoka. Everyone in kendo is so different, and everyone goals in kendo are also different. If you would to say who was the greatest for competition, no doubt its miyazaki!

Let's see, we have Tigerwoods in golf, we have Jordan in basketball, we have Sampras on tennis and in kendo we have, uh? Those guys mentioned above are giants of their fields and their track records have proven in so many aspects that their individual talent put them above the rest. They even broke records of past legends it so happens that they are now existing in our present time. It's like saying who's the greatest samurai, guess what the answer is. You can either be subjective or objective.

Well if u guys asked for THE greatest all time i would have to say Miyamoto Musashi.
I rest my case!
But for the last century, I would probably pick Miyazaki. Although there's a chap by the name of N. Eiga who is very good as well.

Mr. Miyamoto was a very good strategist I agree
but from what I have read he never had a wife
and I could not figure out why
sometimes I think that he really devotes every part of his brain to his job
some other times I think that he just wants to be in bed with lots of different women
but who knows really!

Mochida Seiji.
There is a reason he was the last 10th dan Kendoka.
Noone would _ever_ be as good as that man.

Actually, in the his novel...Musashi had a wife by the name of Otsu. I don't know if it's true or not. Probably not

That is chaging the question... useing this as an example you are looking for the greatest Kendoka at Shiai... that is different than the greaster kendoka. Each kendoka i know of has different reasons and different goals for doing kendo. Some wish to be the best at shiai, some wish to have the best spirit, some wish to have the best form. How do you compare there people? Is any on goal better than the other?

Miyamoto did kendo? Modern kendo (that we all practice today) did not begin till after WWII.. sure it roots date back hundreds of years ago, but kendo today is different than pre-war kendo...

No kidding! The question asked for the greatest kendoka of the last century...it didn't ask for the greatest MODERN kendoka of the last century. I guess the question could've been a bit more clear. Anyways, that's how i feel.

Miyazaki is good (BTW I have a picture with me and him :glasses: ) And if you want a non-Japanese, then Gordon Warner (author of "This is Kendo"), he is quite cool and honoured.
