View Full Version : new training techniques.

Hello again. I got a new amazimg idea for training. It's all been tested and it's proven to have much better results than regular kendo training. Instead of regular training with the shinai, before fighting, pracrice these simple training techniques.

- 50-70 push-ups with special attention to wrist movement
- relax for 2 minutes and repeat the push-ups again.
- tighten your wrists hard and make rapid movements to the stretching limits of the hand.

(this will increase the rigidity of your hands and strength of your arms twice as much as regular practice.)

"... tighten your wrists hard and make rapid movements to the stretching limits of the hand. "

This sounds like ballistic stretching which is considered a no-no in professional coaching circles these days - the likelihood of causing injury is much higher than static stretching (ie - slow stretch using leverage or gravity). My own wrists couldn't handle your exercise because they're f***ed from years of receiving beginners' kote-uchi and taiatari.

If it works for you, go for it. But be aware that some warm-up exercises can, if done incorrectly over time, bring about over-use or even repetitive-strain injuries.

Ah, how stupid was the world before you graced us with your infinite wisdom :-)
One of the reasons, by no mean the first, but still important, why I do kendo, is that we don't do stupid pushups. Ok, you can make some if you need to burn testosterone, but it is neither the most common nor the most usefull thing to do. i don't want to do 40-50 stupid pushups. Ok, sure, sutle wrists and muscular forearms help in kendo, but it is idiotic in my opinion to think that having them will improve your kendo by itself. Timing, a keen eye, a sahrp technique and stamina to do kakari geiko are more usefull to the begginer.
May I respectfully ask,Don, does you sensei advocate this technique? As be pointed out, as far as revolutionary techniques are concerned, it is remarquably outdated....

If you want stronger forearms and wrists you would be better served by just buying a set of those spring loaded hand-grips.
For example; http://www.fit-senior.com/acatalog/Fit_Senior_Hand_Grips_29.html
...just do a hundred a day with each hand.

Or just try doing wrist curls with a barbell.

Pushups are intended to work your pectorals primarily, and your triceps secondarily. Why would you use them when there are better exercises for your forearms? Doing them as you propose is a sure way to hurt yourself.

I think he means "amazing"

Sounds like spam e-mail wording, including the typos and just as believable. Not.

Like Antonin said, doing pushups does not affect your kendo at all. I've been told doing a hundred "suburi" incorrectly is worth less than doing 10 correctly. Strength and speed of the body isn't kendo, it's strength and speed of the mind. Why don't you quit kendo for a few years and just do push ups and come back to kendo? If your training method is "proven" to have "better results than regular kendo training" you should be able to beat all your peers who started the same time you did.
