I just had my first practice yesterday, and during foot work I got some paintful blisters on my right big toe, and on the ball of my left foot. After practice I then asked one of the senior members if I was doing something wrong, and he said no. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so can you tell me how to cope with the blisters over time.

Dude, look below this posting in the forum page, within the table entitled "Similar Threads" and you will see there have been all kinds of discussion on this topic.

Just a suggestion/recommend that you go digging around in there.

I am glad you asked senior members in your dojo. They can give you better answers than someone who can't even see your footwork unless you videotaped yourself and showed everyone.

To answer your question, a lot of people inluding myself have blisters from kendo.

Yeah, everyone gets them. But from the sounds of yours, they seem to be in the right places.

On the ball of the left foot from being on it, then on the big toe on the right foot from sliding your foot forward. At least that's what I would guess they are from.

You can buy some special blister pads that adhere to your blisters and balls of your feet, etc at any drugstore. They work great-- I used them when I got serious blisters when touring Europe a couple of years ago. The skin on your soles, etc. need to adapt to new frictional forces-- once healed, try walking around barefoot more to stimulate cellular build up on your soles and balls of your feet. You might wear socks during practice if you need extra protection while your feet build up thicker cell layers.

So is not getting blisters a bad thing? I'm still waiting for one... My friend has had them on his feet and hands, as have a lot of the other people I train with (on the feet, at least), but none of us girls...

If your seniors tell you that your footwork is correct, and you dont get blisters thats GREAT! your are indeed lucky, and have a natural ability for kendo footwork. My footwork is still imperfect, hence i still get blisters on my feet.

Don't worry, if there is a problem with your footwork, someone at your dojo will inform you. as Hai_hai said, we cannot advise you on your footwork, as we cannnot see it.

Getting blisters are common in Kendo. I still get blister on the ball of my left feet but it is not so painful as the skin got thicken. I heard sweaty feet develops more blisters than dry feet. I'm thinking about trying a spray type antiperspirant on my feet when I go for my grading as I found it is hard to slide smoothly on wooden floor when my feet is wet or during humid season while I perfom kata.

Well, after only a few months, I can't imagine it to be flawless or anything... Sensei will probably start bugging everyone about footwork in a week or two, and then we'll really have some serious footwork to do. I sware, the man has so many pairs of eyes on his head, it's a wonder there's any room left over for hair.
Ah well, guess all those years of running around bearfoot as a child have done some good, after all.

I always get blisters, especially when I am sweating heaps. I try to counter this by using sports tape, which seems to work fine.
