smileys help to convey emotion... I like them, as long as they don't fill the entire post like this :devious: :devious: :devious: :devious:
Yes, what I just did is annoying, but it is nice to throw a smiley in now and then when you are joking so people don't jump to conclusions and misinterpret what people write... after that the only way we can express ourselves is BY TYPING ALL IN CAPITALS LIKE THIS... AM I ANGRY OR REALLY HAPPY... SEE!!! SEE!!!
some people are not so good at interpretting people, hence I like smileys, they help reduce confusion sometimes...

Fair point but this assumes that the people who will read it will be able to understand all the conventions developed and used over those hundreds of years and have the good sense not to leap to the wrong conclusion automatically and take offense where none is intended and accept that the writer may have been joking.
I mean, this is the internet we're posting on here.
Cheers,
Matt. (Who is now tempted to start posting in Shakespearian or Chaucerian English for kicks.)

Or you could acquire some writing skills. People have been conveying strong emotions in English for hundreds of years without the aid of cutesy symbols, fonts or even excessive punctuation.Oh, I can agree with that! But what if English is not your first language? There are different ways of expressing things. The codes are according to the culture you are brought up in.
And before anyone correct me on this...yes non English speaking countries teach British and American culture, but you can't learn everything from a book! In most cases you have to have lived in those countries to understand the language to full extent.
Therefore I'm pro smilies as long as they fill the purpose of avoiding misinterpretations.

smileys are as just as annoying as those accronyms like. omg, wth, wtf, lol and those stuff. but i still use them...wth
~taganahan
I think overuse of anything can be annoying, smileys AND e-lingo, abbreviations, and "l337 5|>33k"
however when it comes to smileys sometime one is needed to convey sarcasm, or playful jokes...
for example:
I got caught shaving my privates today... my mom came in. I don't know why she was so upset... "what are you doing in the kitchen?!" yeah right whatever mom! :D
see, that entire statement was untrue, but without the smiley i run the risk of people thinking that i'd actually shave my privates in the kitchen!
It's like the internet has a permanent case of asperger's syndrome... everything that is said is taken at face value. There is no intonation of voice, facial expressions or gestures. So smileys make up for it.
As for abbreviations and l337, they can be funny in small small doses, but beyond that it gets old fast.
this stuff has been going on for years, and if you're just getting miffed about this already well established form of slang-communication now then....... WELCOME TO THE 21ST CENTURY!!!11111112LOL
ps: i can't stand LOL, but "hahaha" is ok by me

Or you could acquire some writing skills. People have been conveying strong emotions in English for hundreds of years without the aid of cutesy symbols, fonts or even excessive punctuation.very good point, and I'm all for the full-spelling of words as opposed to the "wut r u doin l8r?? Can u c da movie wit me 2 nite?"
Proper grammar MUST be used in a serious correspondence, but most outlets for writing on the internet are non-serious. The internet is mostly informal now, and it would be a dry dry place if everyone wrote like, "Maybe the reason you are experiencing bandwidth difficulty is because you sir, are a silly twit. I am only joking of course. Would you like to partake in a game of counterstrike version one point five with me and some fellow internet-chums? I promise it shall be a match to remember!"
Not everyone can write about "current" humor with the eloquence of the boys on somethingawful.com, or Tycho of pennyarcade.com. so the lax rules of internetdom allow for every person great or small to express themselves.
I guess the problem lies in finding a non-annoying middleground.
as an interesting sidenote, i write hahaha a lot without actually laughing in real life. The times when something i read DOES indeed make me laugh i'll tell the person. "that one actually made me laugh out loud here in the office!" or something to that extent.

The problem is I see smilies alot in places they dont need to be for example when ever you see someone say i did my first iaido/kendo lesson the forum will be jam packed with them, or especially in iaido forum when some one gets a new iaito and usually the "got my iaito today" thread will have a giant big teeth smiley on it already.

what's wrong with expressing happiness about a recent accomplishment?
if he/she said
"got my iaido today." *end of post*
I wouldn't think that person is really excited at all. they're just... relaying the information.
as opposed to something like
"AWWWWWWWWWWW YEEEAH! I GOT MY IAIDO TODAY! w00t!!!!11 :D:D:D I AM SOOOO EXCITED! "
though that is a bit extreme, it would make ME feel excited for the person. i'd feel like commenting and saying, "good job!" or something

Also what is with dudes in england and football shirts, you would think that no other shirt existed, they all seem to have vodafone(spelling) written on them as well. If you want to make fun of americans alot of them are just ignorant so its best to just nod your head and smile cause they dont understand you if your insulting them anyway. Plus americans no matter how long you have lived in the states when ever they hear you, will go your from england right? cool.

You need your kana down pat before you can try to read it though.
I haven't the foggiest grasp of kana or kanji, so it wouldn't do any good... but it's cool to know that 1337 is becoming somewhat international.
Did you know how 1337 started?
it started as a way for people to talk about the more underhanded dealings on the internet like hacking, or piracy on BBs' that would censor certain words.
For example "hacker" was a commonly banned word. but it could be replaced by "hack0r" or "h4cker". The variations could be banned too, so people would change words more and more until it was barely recognizable
("HaxXxorzz" "h4x0r", "|-|^><()|z") vary the number of X's R's Z's and use of ascii symbols and you have a word that can have an infinite number of different forms..
Eventually the operators realized that there was no way of banning words in a language that was constantly changing person to person and instance to instance.
cool eh?
It soon made its way into games and more publicly viewed realms.
it's just unfortunate that 1337 5p34k is no longer truly "elite".... but such is the case with anything that becomes popularized. *insert frowning face here*

Hi Nalogg-San
Interesting background to L337... I used to use it sometimes when I was a Counterstrike addict... (some time ago now...)...
I suppose that the abbreviations used in SMS nowadays are 'Son of L337'... so it continues to morph and live on... Sort of Memetic evolution....
Have you ever encountered the word 'Fnord'? This could be a substitute for some of the Emoticons that have exercised people so much on this forum...

Interesting background to L337... I used to use it sometimes when I was a Counterstrike addict... (some time ago now...)...
I suppose that the abbreviations used in SMS nowadays are 'Son of L337'... so it continues to morph and live on... Sort of Memetic evolution....
Exactly right crabbi... I've heard the "son of leet" used today more commonly referred to as "aol-speak". It's a term used that kinda derogates the users... aol being the "new thing" and the antithesis of what leet originally stood for.
That's what all the "r" instead of "Are" and "u" instead of "you" is.
Maybe we should start using Fnord on this Forum... it might help avoid a lot of misunderstanding and squabbling:

I suppose it's useful but it seems to detract from the humor of those kinds of remarks.... Like what would it sound like if a standup commedian kept saying "i'm only joking!" after every punchline?
In my opinion, the smiley is 10 times more subtle and almost as clarifying as a statement like "fnord".

ELiTE speak actually started way b4 counterstrike developers were even thinking of coding games. It was a manner of communication used on BBS's (bulliten Board Systems) where hacking, phreaking, 'trading', coding took place. Elite speak has taken many form over its evolution. there was the time period where everything was capitalized but the 'i's. then there was the time it was extended ascii characters, then it started using numbers to replace letters. Then it started using them all and it became 100% unreadable. When the internet popped up, all that stuff pretty much went mainstream and dilluted into the gamers culture and subsequently making BBS's obsolete. The undergroung ELiTE culture started using iRC and FTP sites or their own linux boxes to continue their way of life. Nowasays, I have no clue how they have altered the normal 255 ascii character set to talk.

Ukenagashi, for someone who seems so proud to be from the country that developed english, you don't do a particularly good job of employing its spelling or grammar... might be best to make sure you know what you're doing yourself before you start attacking others. I can't say that I love the style of communication that has developed along with the internet, but when people try to get it right and fail, it's all the more amusing.

What makes it worse is when people use spell checkers and use the wrong word, like lose for loose. And why is there no second 'i' in aluminium or 'u' in colour? I'll tell you why....idleness.
No wonder we sent those people off to the ends of the earth, they deserved to be criminalised for not being able to spell.
I've also just found out you now need to be fingerprinted to enter the USA. Nice to see they've gone back to one of our old customs.... Wonder if the same still applies down under as well?
Aussie/USA Customs official: "do you have a criminal record?"
Brit:"why, is it still compulsory?"

i think when people cant use ''me'' correctly is more annoying. colour without an''u'' is just spelling mistake, but ''meself'' is grammar mistake.....

Nope, it's because proper spelling and grammar are now dictated by the inhabitants of Redmond, WA. Send your comments to:

hahaha! But, did you know he can choose to use British English? You can choose which type of English language you want to use with your OS on the MS OS's, I believe. I don't know if it actually works though. If there's a computer IT person here, they'd know for sure if that's true. hehehe, That means Nanbanjin-san... He's an IT person. Bet he'd know! :)

I'm no IT guy yet, I've gotta finnish school first, but I know more about computer than the average guy. Well, for spelling programs, you can change the language of the dictionnary, England english, Canadian English, American English, Australian English, and such.
Since we're in the "Flame" section, I'd like to add that it's not because a nation invented a language, that they absolutly have the purest form of that language. I'm a quebecer, and I don't speak french like the French do. Some words a french would say, like "shopping", "weekends", "footing" and such, won't seem much French to me, but it will to him. Same applies to expressions that I'll say. But it doesn't matters, after all to the french, Quebec is just "a few arpents of snow".
