:D

Issue 4 is finally out. It was sent from New Zealand on Tuesday. we hope that it will beat the Xmas/New Year postal rush in most countries. As the Kendo World staff reside in Japan, we haven't even seen the final product yet, and can't wait.

Tell us what you like/don't like about the latest issue when you get it.

Regards

:D

Received on X'mas Eve. Fantastic as always, I especially liked the Naginata section - can we get the rest of the kata too ;)

One question, does eveyone's Match 58 stop 4 min before the end of the match?

akihiro
28th December 2002, 03:30 PM
Actually, I am having problems with viewing the matches too. They start just fine, but then just freeze towards the end of the file and the audio goes haywire. Anybody else?

hamish
28th December 2002, 04:58 PM
There seems to have been a stuff-up in the CD replication process, leading to some of the matches being partially copied onto the CD, hence the freeze and premature end to some of them.

We are working this out with the company who did it for us, and we will be sending out replacement copies to everyone. Sorry for the disappointment and hassle.

regards

Charlie,
If your mailman can make it through the snow, today might
be the day for Detroit...Issue #4 arrived in NJ today.

Looking forward to a good read...

I wondered why Hamish hadn't replied to this thread. It appears his hard drive decided to die over the New Year, and he has no web access.

The Carbon Shinai winner has been notified by mail, but we haven't had a reply from them yet. When we gain confirmation from them, we will post it on this forum.

Too bad John from NZ. It wasn't you mate.;)

Tim,
Thanks for the advice, but I had tried that before posting and that didn't work either.

The error reads:
"Cannot open 'D:Video\Match 61.mov'. Please verify that the path and filename are correct and try again."

I get the same message for each of the video files.

Anyone have any ideas?...

Thanks.

Are you able to copy the files to your hard drive and run them from there?

Also, do you get the same error when you try to open the html files?

Hamish

I tried either way ( IE or QT, Hard Disk or CD )
Here';s what I found.
Mov file 58,59,61,62 towards the end picture wouldn't move and just play sound like a loud static noise.
Other files played OK for me.

yup, Alex explained something about the copiers screwing up(see page 1 of this thread). The static noise gave me a scare, I thought my PC screen just went kaput!

Incidentally, have the replacement copies been mailed out yet?

Hi there,

the amended copies have not been sent out yet. The problem of course being that this the worst possible time of the year for this kind of thing to happen. The company that did the CDs for us has been on holiday until 14th January! They have completely admitted that they screwed up, and have agreed to re-do them and send them out again, so hopefully it will all be done before the end of the month. Once again, we are really sorry for this.:(

KhawMengLee

Its cool. The magazine was good enough by itself and the cd was an added bonus. On the bright side at least the 3 main matches and match 60 worked okay.

Alex,
any chance of putting on some footage of iaido, jodo and jukendo in future? I think it would go down pretty well with most of us, especially the more obscure styles we tend not to see outside of Japan much? I currently have a load of old footage on MJER iaido and only what I could cover at last years Kyoto taikai, such as kusarigama v. sword, so something a little out of the ordinary would go down well with me!

Hamish,
I can open the .html files no problem.

When I copy the .mov files and try to open them from
the new location I get the same error.

Very frustrating....

burger boy: is there another computer you can try it out on?

Tim: We had some footage of the All Japan iai champs, but it didn't fit on the CD when we came to do the final editing. We may go to DVD next time to get more on.

Hadn't thought of that...I'm going to sneak it into work tomorrow morning and see if I can get it going there.

Thanks.

dvd would be good, I suppose most of us are sad enough to own one just to watch our babycart videos...
Thinking about buying a dvd recorder as they are coming down in price. I currently have 50 odd hours on MJER given to me by Nishimoto sensei going back to pre-war footage, but the quantity of tape takes up loads of space. If you are prepared to let the quality go down a little you can apparently get quite a lot on one disk.

Hamish,
dont know if you can manage this but there are only a few of the really old guys around who actually used swords in WW2 etc. Would be nice to get them on tape asap (doing their own style, not seitei) before they disappear off the scene due to old age. The younger ones you can catch later on...

It was with astonishment I opened Issue 4 as I did not expect to see anything from our little country in the magazine.
The article "Bu way in Norway?" was great. However there was one shortcoming;
Dr. Alex Bennett did not mention his superb performance on the Karaoke floor.
Joined by Kåre Jon from Bergen Kendo he did a marvellous interpretation of "Hit me (with your rythmstick)"
It is evident that the grace and agility gained from praticing kendo comes in handy when being on a dancefloor singing karaoke.
Wish I had that on video. No such luck. However we do have two videos from the seminar. One where Dr. Alex Bennett instruct us and some karate-kas. The second showing a short demonstration of how kendo "works" and a kata demonstration.
Both published on our web site with the kind permission from the host of the seminar, Mandal Karate Club.

Sound interesting?
Check it out on http://www.osi.uio.no/kendo/Filer.htm
Be aware that the files are big so if you are on a slow modem connection I would think twice about downloading them.

Another comment to the article regarding the rivalry between the people from Oslo and the ones from Bergen; I was born in Bergen, but live in Oslo. Thus, being kind of in the middle of everything I have to gangs beat the .... out of me everytime we meet.

Thanks to Dr. Alex Bennett for coming to the budo seminar in Mandal. It was grately appriciated.
