I like to draw, so I decided to draw some pictures of kendo.
The first one I drew a long time ago for my grandma. She wanted me to draw myself in my new bogu. I didn't draw it with the men though, because I couldn't really draw the face that way. It doesn't look a thing like me except for the hair. ^^; I didn't want it to look like me anyway.
The next one is in my signature. I drew it about an hour ago. What do you think? Do you like art? If you happen to make a kendo picture sometime post it here!

Kendo art is awesome.

In the first drawing you look like a Kenshin in the making. Go you for drawing what you like, and giving Mr.Himura a run for his money. :D

I really like to draw. This is the first year in school I haven't taken art because freshman don't have electives, but I draw in my spare time. I've been working on drawing kendo stances and different kendo items, but they all turn out horrible. I am a really good drawer other than that.

I've seen only good work come from people taking Kendo. I think after taking Kendo you feel more diciplined and do things differently. Or at least I do!

Beautiful watercolor painting, and Kristy your drawings are better than okay they are Very very good. You draw a lot better than I do.

Kirsty,

You have real talent! Do you do your drawings on the computer, or do you use the old fashioned manual method?

They have a wonderfully drawn anime feeling to them, and I really like the one you posted of the young lady in chudan no kamae back on page 2 of this thread, post #21.

Wish I could have learned to draw that well, but I don't have the patience with myself. This is another good reason to take kendo, you MUST learn patience if you are to succeed.

Thanks for sharing your art with us. I'm looking forward to more of it.

Well, I use the old fashioned manual method for my drawings. I bought really good art markers to color my pictures. They work really well.
I'm better at drawing anime style because thats how I learned to draw people. =)
I like putting two things I enjoy together: Kendo, and Drawing/art.
It does take a lot of patience for both kendo and drawing, but if it was really easy, then it might be boring. ^_^

Kirsty,

The do cut is really great. As Infinity stated, artistic license is perfectly legal. Besides, it's the concept you're trying to convey, not the technical application of the shinai.

It isn't a question of obvious mistakes, since you are illustrating a do cut, and most of us understand the concept. To ask you to draw perfect technique is to rob you of the artistic quality of your drawing. You aren't drawing for an instruction manual, you are drawing to illustrate the concepts of kendo, plus to entertain us and yourself with your talent.

Don't apologize for any "mistakes" in your illustrations, consider your art similar to kendo, always striving for perfection. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to show the spirit and you are doing that very well.

Keep it up!

Very pretty pictures armourer! They are kinda small ^^; , but from what I can see, they look really good! The colored one looks well done too! ^_^ So what if its only a 20 minute sketch. Good art doesn't always take long to finish. I don't always spend much time on my pictures unless I color the background. Backgrounds are hard to do! Maybe I will draw a kendo pic with a cool background sometime...I need some new markers first though. Anyway....
I'm happy that you are motivated to create art again. You have a lot of talent for it. =)
Oh! If you want to post the actual picture, just upload it to a website like photobucket.com, and copy and paste the picture itself. Not the url. Thats what I do. =)

i love the look of photoshop work.
sometimes i prefer the more tactile essence of painting with watercolours.
though in photoshop, i like the control/z to undo a mistake.
its very hard to undo a mistake in watercolours.

i too am a trained art teacher and i find it hard to produce a lot of art work.
it is not that i am not inspired i think it is the time factor.
i get in and paint whenever i can.

here is a tenegui that i painted recently.
i used silk paint and i wear it most training sessions. it is wearing well.

As the Microsoft commercial states - "We stand in awe of your potential." I have to say that every one of these pictures is outstanding.

Infinity, beautiful tenegui. One must always take the time to do the things one enjoys, else there is no joy in life. Even if it's sitting out in a garden listening to the sounds of life around you, you have to have your own time.

To all, once again, thank you for sharing your wonderfully beautiful artwork.

I wanted to draw something different and make it a little more interesting, so I drew three people. Its very rare for me to draw more than two people. I guess this is a small sign of improvement. ^^ Oh! And if you can't see the picture please tell me because I had to upload it on another website. Photobucket isn't working right now. =(

Hi Kirsty! I like your style of drawing. Some people go over board trying to copy the manga stuff but yours seem more of a mix, origional style .
Its just I got confused because [ten] is missing, the part your forhead slots into. This goes about 3 slats down so on your picture it makes there forheads look strange to me.

I like the faces though so theres nothing wrong :D.

Is there something special about the cotton fabric used in tenegui? If not, it should be just as easy to buy cotton fabric at a fabric store, cut it, and have the long edges sewn to prevent fraying. After you've washed it to remove the manufacturer's sizing, you can then decorate it as you like.

I've considered doing this, but have refrained since I don't have a sewing machine, and my artwork is terrible at best.

tenegui fabric is a specific width. other than that is is fine cotton material. 'the long edges' are the salvage (sp?) and probably would be rather bulky if you were to sew a hem or overlock that edge.
there has been quite a lot written about this topic on these forums.

Another picture! This one is different from the rest because it actually has a background. I don't take credit for the background. I borrowed it from my dojo's website. Maybe I can take some pictures of people practicing in the dojo and draw more pictures like this. My mom said that this is a picture of me. Its not me! :silly: I almost didn't post this picture because it looked a little weird with the real picture in the background, but I decided to post it to see what everyone thought. =)

Ah yes, mirrors can reveal our flaws, but what a wonderful way to see what you are doing wrong. If sensei says you're not putting your feet correctly, watching a video of yourself will at least give you an idea of what you're doing wrong. In that respect, it enhances, rather than destroys your determination.

I would really look forward to seeing some video of me in action, whether at keiko or in a shiai. I would look to see what bad habits I had, and try to correct them. But that's just me...

I think I'll have someone video (http://go-acct.com/?go=video) tape me in kendo sometime to see exactly what I'm doing wrong. It would be very helpful. Sometimes I wish there was a big mirror in the dojo so I could see what I'm doing wrong, but then I think how weird a mirror would look in a nice dojo like that. Here is the first page of a comic I'm starting. Its not that good. The pencil coloring looks terrible! Oh well. ^^; I also don't know if I should add anything to the top right corner. It looks like its missing something. I might make it tell about the main character, Pepper, and that she is in kendo. I didn't plan ahead when I drew this, so I don't think it really makes any sense. I'll let you decide. ^_^ Also, should I continue with this comic or start over?

That would be really neat if my work could be published. ^_^ Theres so much competition though. ^^;. A simple little webcomic is what it will be for now. If some miracle happened and my work was published, I would let you do some calligraphy. ^_^ Hey! You can anyway if you want.

Well, Here is page 2 of the comic/manga...whatever you want to call it. =P Don't worry. There will be actual kendo in it soon. ^_^

I know what happens next! One of them sweeps the floor, while the other one fills the water cooler with ice and water. Then when Sensei shows up they both help him bring his stuff into the dojo from the car. OK, OK so now you see why I don't create manga (besides having no artistic ability) - too deeply rooted in reality. Better I should leave the creativity to Kristy.

Good work. Keep it up.

Heres the next page to the comic. I think I need to work on fitting more pictures on one page. ^^; This time I didn't color anything in because the scanner picks up every single (http://get-data.net/?go=single) line from the pencil. It doesn't look good like that. I also need to think of something for the characters to say. Maybe I'll make them talk more on the page after this. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I'd appreciate them. ^_^

Suggestion: Make me a character, please? I can be a practice dummy or something if character-space is limited....

Sure! I'll make you a character too. ^_^ It'll be easier since I know you. You don't have to be a practice dummy. =P If you want your character to act or look a certain way you can tell me. =) Same goes for Light Samurai and GoldenShinai. Anyway, I drew the next page. If anyone thinks I should change anything you can tell me. I AM drawing this for everybody and everyone is welcome to help out with the story. ^_^

Let's hope that the fortune goes to Kirsty, not to some anonymous speculator selling items on eBay. Nothing wrong with selling them, but I remember Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) lost a considerable amount of money from people who ripped off his Calvin character to make it into a little boy urinating on (enter your choice here). He felt it was worth more to do nothing than to try to chase all of these copyright violators down and prosecute.

Kirsty, don't apologize for your work, don't feel as if you have to explain every problem you had. You can tell us, but don't think it's necessary that we know EVERYTHING. You are doing very well with the comic, I know that your time is limited, especially right around this weekend - Mother's Day - so that when you get home, you're probably exhausted.

Keep up the good work.

i like you style mate.
my opinion for what it is worth - if you want a totally realistic image of a kendoka - take a photograph.

art is not about repoducing exactly what the eye sees.

if that is what you think, you have missed the point and i cant be bothered explaining to you what art is about.

good work on your website, infinity ...
i think i enjoyed more your "themed" section...the first 4.

since you seem to be doing your kendo artwork from photography, make sure that you make alot of pictures of the same action, just to make sure you got the correct timing on the strikes that would gives the proper strenght to the image. not sure with what you shoot tho, it might be a problem, mainly with low to medium end digital cameras that take about 2 secs between the moment you hit the button and the moment the frame is actually captured.

oh well, keep up the good work.

I'd like to suggest something as well...since you are selling your artwork online...it might be a good idea to keep down the file size, or to add something in the frame that says its made by you ...
i just made a quick test, and i could print myself a nice work of yours, 11x14 inches at 300dpi, just with your website's example.

upon a second look at your website, i spent more time at the sport inspired section, and i came to wonder how big were the originals paintings on coton ?

i love the use of texture in your work, be it coton like "Spirit" or the Aquarelle (Arches?) paper texture of your other works like the "Sonkyo".

the photographic comment about timing and all came from paintings like "Pete Ippon", definitively not for all of them. I think that for that timing i'm talking about, your more accomplished ones are definitively "Spirit" and also "Pete Men".

hope to see more soon. nice work.

Trust me, I've run into the problems of bogus art copies and jerks taking credit for stuff that is not theirs. Because of this, the background I made with the painting credits the artowrk to Infinity, giving a link to her website (edited it once she gave the link). It is only on my computer, where no one has access to it but me. If, at any time, Inifinity wishes me to remove it, I will.

i'm kidding. as an artist, i appreciate the fact that you came and said you had it as a background on your computer.

I know that you were kidding, but I just wanted to be clear that I meant absolutley no disrespect to Infinity or her talent.

i am of the opinion if someones wants to take credit for my work, good luck to them.
mmm... as long as its not too much credit.
i know who created it and people who know me and have seen my work in real life know its mine.
that is all i really need. people can copy my work off the net but they havent got the real thing in their folio, i have (or the person i sold it to has it).

hey guys if you want my work on your computer, its yours.
just get in quick as i am in the process of watermarking the images on my site.

and thanks for crediting my work, skippy.

im glad you like it.

I'm of the opinion that one should give credit where credit is due, so no problem whatsoever.

Also, does anyone know what the exchange rate is from USD to AUD? I'm very interested in buying the "Spirit" tenegui.
