There is a place to buy Shinsen Gumi outfits at http://www.shop-japan.co.jp/english-boku/shinsengumi-s.htm Does anyone have any experince with them? If so, was it good or bad? Also, are there cheaper places to buy the same outfit? I'm looking just to buy the hanten, and then just put on my hakama over the lower part.. also can someone give me a clear defintion of a hanten?
Thanks all.

Now I'm confused - is it supposed to be red/white or blue/white?

I always thought it was blue/white, but I've seen so many color variations. Perhaps there are different colors for the higher people in power?

I think it was always blue/white, or it was always portrayed as such.

I want one too =(

In anime it's blue and white, but in Gohatto it was black with gold chevrons for what was probably rank.

That is a good site though I haven't ever bought any thing from them. I wanted to buy a kimono under shirt if I bought a kimono but the new under shirts are more expencive than the kimono . I'm not sure but I saw a shop near where I live that seems to sell the same stuff. Not checked it out yet though..

I think the shinsengumi mostly wore blue and white but some of the more famouse people wore veriouse colours and even western clothing with revolver :D.

BTW I bought a hanten from E-bay a cople of years ago. Its like a Japanese salesmans outfit http://www.menz-kimono.com/hanten.html. Its good doing bokuto practice outside wearing Japanese style clothing. They have alot of air and long sleaves good for suburi. Sweaters just close in your muscles and make it hard to lift your shinai or bokuto :(. Festivle hanten can also be quite cool too:

http://www.goodsfromjapan.com/shop/hanten_en.html

Because you know it takes about an hour to put on traditional Japanese clothing like kimono and hakama in the correct way. Thats why few people wear them now and when they do you must walk around the street with your clothing on. Things like hanten are much more convinient for the Japanese feel :D.

In Japan you don't wear a thing with festivel hanten which are called Happi or Happy coats lol :D. Thats not an option if you are a girl and if it is cold you can wear a tea shirt.

http://www.japanesestreet.com/20033/feature/thumb.htm

There isn't really a point in wearing a keiko-gi if you want to wear a happi coat for suburi because it is easier just to wear the keiko-gi.
If you want to wear it for a photo or some thing you can wear you DO and TARE too. All you need then is a Hachimaki with metal pad.. You could get some one to sew some thing onto some cloth but I have no idea about that :p.

What is it exactly that the Shinsengumi members wore unerneath their haori? And what are those strange elbow pads I see the members wearing.

Light Samurai

I bought a montsuki and under under shirt for 81.53 Dollers, 25 pounds. Old kimono are cheaper than second hand clothing here and a new mens obi costs the same as a montsuki. Light if you really was authentic shinsengumi, you should buy a kimono, undershirt (http://image.www.rakuten.co.jp/sendaiya2/img1008508429.jpeg), obi (http://www.rakuten.co.jp/cws/535045/483268/608070/#649188), black and white hakama :D.

P.S I think Hanten means shop clothing. I don't think the shinsengumi worked in a grocery shops in there spare time. Haori might be better.

Oh well, I curently don't have around $200. Well, I could always get someone to reswo it over the latters on the back, with blue over it. -shrug- Anyway, I plan on getting a hadagi, surutekko and Obi on my next purchase.

It is possible to have your own happi coats designed by a company in Kyoto that can add your name, college or dojo on the lapels and at the back. Details from

I'm positive I've seen Shinsengumi haori somewhere before...http://www.shop-japan.co.jp/english-boku/shinsengumi-s.htm

Yeah. There it is. Hopefully this is what you're talking about...It costs some money, but I bet it has better quality than some of the other vendors out there. Hope that helps.
