I have heard of yonkyu and sankyu gradings performed both with or without bogu. When would you say that bogu is absolutly required for passing the grading?

KaedeHey, that's a good question! I never tested before 1-kyu so I'm curious, too. What grade is the average in dojos for testing with bogu?

Over here in our club to qualify for gokyu and above you must use bogu.

I just had my first grading in Febuary and all I was required to wear was the tare (My bogu had just arrived the day of the grading) and I was awarded 4th Kyu.

My sensei will not even consider promoting anyone who isn't in bogu, that includes for 6th kyu.
One of my dojo-mates took the promotion exam for ikkyu a couple of weeks ago, going from no grade to ikkyu in one exam.

In Australia, tare and doh have to be worn for 6th and 5th kyu shinsa. Full bogu is required for 4th kyu and up.

I was thinking the same thing a few days ago and I forgot to ask my sensei, anyways I'm not interested in grading yet.

As the Kyu exams are dojo dependant it really depends on the Sensei. The only time you have to start wearing bogu for grading is at the federation levels which starts at 1-kyu.

I found these requirements for kyu grading in Sweden:
yonkyu: Dai Ichi Kihon or Suburi, Uchi Komi: Men, Kote-men, Kote-do
sankyu: Dai Ichi Kihon or Suburi, Uchi Komi, Kiri Kaeshi, Jigeiko
nikkyu: Dai Ichi Kihon or Suburi, Uchi Komi, Kiri Kaeshi, Jigeiko, Kata (tachi 1, 2 och 5)
ikkyu: Jigeiko, Kata (tachi 1,2 och 5), possibly a written exam
Well, I have heard that you can grade to sankyu without bogu. How do you avoid being killd in jigeiko if you don't wear bogu?
If the kyu grading depends on the sensei, won't the level of skill differ from school to school? How will you determine if your student will pass a shodan grading? Trial and error?
Sorry, had a lot's of questions today. Interesting to see how grading differ from country to country by the way!

Good question... but I don't think there are sankyu gradings in Sweden that does not use bogu.

Hopefully you have a sensei that has passed at least one dan grading. Then of course he should know what it takes.

Yup, especially as we seem to be quite alone by being forced to go through four kyu grades before grading to shodan. But, I kind of like that. Always a new goal to aim for :)

I dun get that.................how can you even be a sensei, or call yourself one if you have no dan............. I think you should have like 5th dan to come close to being a sensei..........at least in proper iaido its that way............

By sensei, I refer to the instructor in question. I know that the use of "sensei" and "sempai" differs between clubs, but I personally use sensei about my instructor regardless of their grade. In Sweden there are only about 700-1000 kendoka and around 100 iaidoka, and having a 5th dan or above instructor is not always possible.
Currently practising iaido for a ikkyu instructor, and it works very well.

Many dojo around here used to combine 4th kyu with getting into armour. The British Kendo Association is now taking a new approach which seems to involve a gradual introduction of armour from sixth kyu onwards:
