The AUSKF menjo fee for shodan is $30. Depending on which regional federation your membership is in there are additional regional fees. PNKF =$20 exam fee for a total of $50 if you are successful.

Hi Light-san,

hehehe, He means for shodan in Kendo. That's a LOT for yours. I wonder if other Aikido dojo charge that much.

Where in California are you practicing? If you're in Southern California check out this page from the Southern California Kendo Federation (SCKF) website:

http://www.eanet.com/sckf/doc/fees.htm

The Northern California Kendo Federation (NCKF) should have similar fees.

You really should ask your sensei or dojo adminstrator to confirm.

Thanks that link to the SCKF answered my question.

When I tested in TKD it cost $300 for 1st dan and If I want to test for 2nd it's like $400. I was hoping that when I get to that point in Kendo that my rank wouldn't cost that much.

You can see the CKF fee schedule here (http://www.kendo-canada.com/forms/CKFdanfees04.jpg). It starts getting expensive at 4th dan ($315 total fees) but under that it's quite affordable.

Even though the cost is posted as $$$, the real answer is about 2000 - 2500 hours of study. So if your billing rate is $100 per hour it will be about $250 K.

Most adults can get shodan in 2-3 years of practising twice a week. That's 400-600 hours in my book. 2000 hours would be about 10 years in our dojo.

In Australia, the AKR sets the fee for (over 16) sho-dan at $25 to apply and if you pass - $35 for registration of the result and certificate. A total of AUD$60, I guess that's a bit over US$50.

The fee for members under 16 is about half.

Fees then increase for higher dan levels.

Sensei-
I was thinking more of home study, workouts (footwork and suburi) and seminars with a factor of 4:1 for in dojo time. That's how I came up with 2000 hours over 2-3 years.

The NCKF test fee for shodan is $20; the corresponding menjo is $30 for English and $40 for Japanese. It is not clear to me if the shodan test/menjo fee is less for those 17 years and under; if it is, then it would be $10 test and $10/$20 for menjo. All in USD, of course.

Hope this helps,

RC Kenshi

P.S. I note from your profile, you are unranked in kendo, so I assume you are just asking out of curiosity. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
