Are any of Aoshi's double kodachi techniques actually pratical at all? I know it's a dumb question, but I would really like to know.

Hey guys, im definately no expert as I just started kendo myself. But i think that show is mostly fictional, I am a huge fan! Wow what an amazing show. But really, the stuff they do and use requires super human strength/speed so...I just doubt it lol. Ive read a lot on here about using like double swords and stuff, so i assume same for that double sided blade. There is no style or technique where you just start off using that, it requires you to build up to it. Like with kendo/iaido or such, ya know? I hope ive explained this a little...

Uhh I strongly doubt there's a ryu like that since it would be pretty damn pointless from a samurai's perspective. They carried daisho: a daito and a shoto, not two shoto/wakizashi/kodachi.

In my own point of view, it could have some uses. I could see using 2 kodachis being very useful for countering. Of course, it wouldn't have much offensive ability.

Yes, however, Aoshi in RK was a *NINJA* so he didn't play by the same rules the other samurai did.

I might as well use this thread to answer a question I have. If a person was using two kodachis against a person with a katana, is there anyway for the person with the kodachis to get close enough to hit the person with the katana?

Sai were used in pairs, and I have been told they were designed with fighting a longer sword in mind. There is also a type of Chinese sword I can't remember the right name of now - sometimes called "butterfly swords" http://www.1stopkarateshop.com/productBrowseView/view/Products.pml?category=1412 that I've seen video of somebody training against a longer sword with, so it's not out of the question. I think the key is that the ability to block or deflect and attack at the same time makes up for the disadvantage in reach. If the fictional style is based on anything real at all, it's probably something more along the lines of sai or "butterfly sword" techniqures rather than kodachi.

I agree with the above theory i think that it is possible to use 2 smaller weapons to defeat someone with a big one. It's all about speed and timing and skill.

Add the fact that in a closed space like a house, the long sword would be at a disadvantage opposit a double or single kodachi user, plus an assassin would never face a samurai, he would use "cowardly" ways instead.

i've seen some of the shows. SOME of the techniques are real, they're just exaggerated (a lot). ex. iai drawing (kendo) and two layers fist(karate).

I would have to say: Some of Aoshi's moves are justlifiable. They're just a bit "stupid." His technique where he formes a japanese/chinese symbol of ten and strikes makes hit strike twice as strong and fast (supposedly) but kind of leaves him open. I have no idea how is "Kaiten Kenbu" or "Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren" could be done. Also, his "scisor" strike. It seems correct, if you think about scisors, but it is kind of weird...

Just try to remember that it is anime and a lot of everthing that is done mostly requires some sort of super human strength.. I don't know much about his but this is all I have to offer..

I personally don't know much, but I CAN at least list his moves:

Ryuusui no Ugoki Jissen Kenbu: The water flow technique, where Aoshi moves around the enemy so fast, they don't know where he is.
Even with my little knowledge, I can absolutely assure you that this is impossible. XD

Kaiten Kenbu: After using jissen kenbu, he spins around, slicing the enemy three times across the chest quickly.
Doubt this one could be used, and even if it could, it'd probably be pretty useless, since it leaves you open.
Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren: Similar to Kaiten kenbu, only with 6 slashes instead of 3.

Onmyou Hashi: The move where Aoshi puts both kodachi together in a row and throws it, making it look like there was only one. Once the first is blocked, the second comes in and kills.
This COULD be useful. Maybe. For example, if the person was turned around or something, or only had time to block one.

Onmyou Kousa: This is when Aoshi hits an opponent's weapon with one kodachi, then brings down the second to form an X at the point where both kodachi and the opponent's weapon are, to break the opponent's weapon.
I could see this used by a person with a lot of arm strength. Think... Hammering in a nail. Just slamming a nail with your hand won't make it stay, but using a hammer will. Hope I didn't confuse anyone...

Gokou Jouji: Described as the scissors technique before XD This is where he makes the swords into a cross in front of him and tries to slice his opponent's head off.
Dunno about this being used practically. The opponent could easily block that with a single katana, though the two kodachi together probably give an advantage in power...
