Hi Everyone,

I am interested in bamboo do especially the old-fashioned one where bamboo staves can be seen from the outside (http://kendo.tozando.com/byparts/ba22.html). I would like to know how it behaves in dry climate to decide whether to invest in such a thing. I searched the forum but it seems that there is no iformation on this topic. Does anyone have any experience?

I couldn't open the link, but those ones are good for hanging on your wall, not wearing!!

Chibabogu basically says the same thing. Seems like no wonder I have never seen anyone wearing them.

think about it, if a shinai will break from banging against another shinai, wouldnt a bamboo do?

Bamboo do covered with lacquered leather is totally different from bare bamboo do. The former is really strong and higher quality.

well, shorter peices are harder to break than long ones (like the shinai), but as has been said, the do with leather over them are far sturdier than this one would be, as the leather would help disperce the blow and all that...

The bamboo used in a do is denser, harder, older and more expensive than the the bamboo used in the (disposable) shinais.

I met a 7th dan form Kyoto last year who wore the exposed bamboo do.
He had no difficulty with it wearing out as no-one could hit it anyway!

Conclusion: this kind of do is for people having a grade high enough to be able to ensure the long life of their stuff by avoiding being hit. :cool2:
