I've always had this dream to someday learn a koryu bujutsu, such as a kenjutsu or battojutsu style in Japan. I guess I'm just wondering of curiosity, what does it take to be admitted to a koryu bujutsu dojo? I'm assuming you cannot just walk right in and say to the sensei, "I want to learn your art, where do I sign?" and just be let in. Of course there are different schools that have different customs I am sure, but in general are there any criteria that one should have before taking up a koryu fighting art (besides knowing Japanese; that probably goes without saying)?
