I'm not sure about you guys...but for those of you who are still in school (I'm not sure if this still applies in the work-force...but...who knows) have you ever met those "self-proclaimed swordmasters"? Those who just endlessly talk about how they could "kill people with my daikatana"? There are a select few who just...well...drive me bloody CRAZY with how inaccurate they are about kenjutsu or kendo...Maybe I just have a short fuse...but I'd like to know how everyone here deals with them.

I just laugh and walk away. When they want to know what's funny, I tell them that they are funny.
If I try to discuss anything with them, using rational arguments, I fall into their trap, because they don't use rational arguments, they use emotion. So, my feeling mirrors what LCDR Worf once said in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode: "If you choose not to believe me, then die in ignorance." (That doesn't mean I will kill them, it means that I'm not going to tell them, ever.)

Exactly, just like Gatsu-sensei. I'm not a sword master, and never will be. But, I can come close. I haven;t even took the first step. Anyway, Gatsu-sensei uses emotion, not reason. -nod- Just all I wanted to say.
Peace. (Love right now is hard.)

Okay, I'm just glad that you all felt the same way. It sort of baffles me to how people can act so knowledgable about a subject when they got their information from a computer game. Yeah...I...don't really have words for a swordsman whose waza comes from clicking a mouse.

Andou, I agree. True strength only comes from hardships (in this example, sword training) and some refuse to acknowledge this. Some can be swayed by enlightenment on the topic, but many get defensive. All you can say is "Do what you will" and leave it alone.

Some people come to realization through delusion. A very good friend of mine told me ounce he was really good at sword fighting, he asked me to fight with him so he could prove it, after a quick men on my part he gave up the sword, I think he's a red belt in Tae kwon do(sorry if i missspelled) now. He floored me unarmed. Great guy.

Let them live in their own delusional beliefs.
You can tell them about kendo and that you practice it and that they are welcome to visit or learn. If they do decide to join, reality will hit them and they find out that they are complete idiots without having you tell them so.
Me, I don't have a problem with those people. I'm a self-proclaimed ninja.

I was thinking about bringing a pair of shinais to school and challenging them to a bout after class, but I think that might be a little to extreme in some cases. And as for your ninja position...are you a serious self proclaimed ninja or like...Real Ultimate Power ninja...both are okay, but the latter is just hilarious.

wow.......sounds familiar. People i know go around with sticks and think they are swordsmen and challenge me to "stick fights" XD. When i decline, they ask why, and i laugh. I tell them about Kendo and Iaido and then they tell me that martial arts are a complete waiste of time because someone could just shoot me. That has to be the thing that pisses me off the most.

Amen. I guess they don't see beyong beating the person with a sword/stick/whatever. Whatever could be a mudskipper.. mackrel.. etc.
Peace.

That, my friend, is something I left out of my original post. People who say that can never really understand any deeper meaning to work done on anything.

There was this one beginner I completely sympathised with at Mumeishi. It was his first ever practise and we were waiting for the karate dudes using the hall to finish before we went in at 8pm, so to fill the silence I asked how he got into kendo, what sparked his interest, etc.
One day he was by a pool at a party (obviously piss-drunk) when he and a friend were playing about with some sticks and having a mock swordfight. As they were fighting, his friend stopped him, and his friend, being a bazillionth dan and all, was passing on some wisdom and told him that he has mad skillzors and should look into Kendo. This guy then tells me that he thought Kendo was a good step forward to develop his already competent combative sword skills, (to get himself out of any tricky situations.)
I understood how he felt, as I began taking Drunken Maruni Afro Ninja Hapkido classes with a similar sentiment.

Yeah. Dai-katanas are real. I think they're more often referred to as a nodachi though.

these guys are fanatics...myself I'm even afraid of hitting some one when doing kata.....and that's with a bokken......They have no idea (and so havn't I myself...however I don't even want to know) the faintest idea what it's like to kill someone...

My advice is, try to not let them get at you.
I know several people who act in these cases, but, they are a little more open minded. They don't base things on video games or emotions, just what they learn from watching tv. So... if they ask me, I try to help.
Just my 2 cents,

I am a serious self-proclaimed ninja. I've read through countless issues of Black Belt magazine, played who knows how many hours on Samurai Shodown, and have skimmed through hundreds of pages of ninja books while at the bookstore.
