A new good samurai movie? I'm going to have to say Lance Henriksen and Nicol...well that joke got old fast.

For a real one though, I think that Sanada Hiroyuki wouldn't be a bad choice. I saw "Twilight Samurai" on television a month or so back. Perhaps he might not be able to move in all the correct ways, but I hear in Japan they think he is the new period movie star (comparison to Mifune Toshiro).

I'm not really sure to who can really portray a samurai and act/move like one who practices swordsmanship, but then again...I'm not too knowledgable in the Hollywood/Japanese actors scene so...excuse my ignorance.

Beckham, Beyonce, and J-Lo. And they're in the streets... And they're attacked... And Beckham is wearing his gi outside his hakama and takes this outrageous stance... And then.... Oh, damn, it's already been done.

theres a sequel to samurai fiction, about the ninjas. but its not as good.

theres ANOTHER sequel to samurai fiction called stereo future, same director. kinda the same actors, but it takes place in real life. not really a sequel at all, just a continuation of the directors style and interpretation from what the reviews says.

twilight samurai is probably the latest samurai movie that i know of. its a cool inside interpretation of "real" samurai life of warriors without a cause. they are stuck in their class but dont have anyone to fight, so they do the normal government work stuff, and life goes on. i really liked this film. i recommend it.

I'd say a new samurai movie should be based on the Yagyu in some fashion. I still haven't seen a great Yagyu movie that didn't depict them as evil or just depict Jubei Yagyu.

I liked Taboo, though its a few years old.

Check out "Mibugishiden" (aka "When the Last Sword is Drawn") if you can. It's a 2003 movie featuring Nakai Kiichi as a member of the Shinsengumi. The DVD is only available in Japan currently as far as I know, but it's a good production worth finding.

They should just translate the Shinsengumi NHK drama to English.

I've found mibugishiden DVD in lot's of swedish rental stores. And if you can find it in my hometown it shouldn't be too hard to find. It might help to know that it's distributed by Universal Picture's asian divison

Oh no not "translate" as in dubbing, more like subtitled would be cool.

By samurai do you mean a samurai movie or a shambara one?

How about just 75 minutes of "Celebrity Bludgeoning". Kendoka from all over the world (and the milky way) come to a giant arena to face three kensei: JLo, Beckham and Cruise. But oh-no! Our celebrities forgot their bougu!

I'd pay money to see that.

Come on those are stars, they could pull it off even without bougu.

Nooooooooooooo...Kill Bill vol.1 was a joke...Kill Bill vol.2 made me embarresed to be chinese...Tarantino has had teo good movies (Dogs n Pulp) after that its been alllllllll downhill.

Mibugishiden was brilliant and so was Tasagore Seibei(Twilight Samurai). At the moment no one can replace Toshiro Mifune or Tetsuya Nakadai or even Shintaro Katsu...too many pretty boys and not enuff gruff eastwood typrs...

Samurai Fiction was pretty cool. Stereo Fiction is not a sequel...tho most of the same actors are in it. Akakage isn't the sequel either and in all honesty was a real mess...good idea bad execution.

Whatever Sanada Hiroyuki will be in is going to be sweet!!!
So If I made a Shinsengumi Movie I would make him Kondo Isami. Or else Okita.

I've read in a movie's review that he is a master swordsman, but i dont know if its true or if it was just to attract more people towards watching the movie. Honestly, i'm not at a level where i can judge someone's swordmanship just by watching him and, as you, i have no idea about the various martial art skills of the Japanese actors.

I think a movie displaying the downfall of Oda Nobunaga, and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi would be cool. Hideyoshi was one of the very few who re-unified Japan, and played the part of coming up with the Samurai Class. Which is quite odd, because he was a peasant before he became Shogun.

He was ferocious in battle aside from his appearance, he wore a nice kabuto too, big fan thing.

N e SERIOUS Samurai movie would be good, im tired of watching the whole western samurai thing; don't get me wrong, i loved The Last Samurai, filmed in teh homeland of New Zealand too :D

It would be good to see an intelligent samurai with older actors, quite a few of the actors in Last Samurai really looked the part, especially Ken Watanabe.

N e way:

Peace

Here's a JApanesw TV series about Nobonaga. I've been considering picking it up, but I'm too poor at the moment...

NOBUNAGA - KING OF ZIPANGU

This Taiga Drama spans the entire life of Japan’s first great warlord, Oda Nobunaga, who began the process of uniting Japan that was continued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and completed by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Great history, together with tremendous battle scenes. This series ran for an entire year with one episode every week.

Does anyone know if any of the NHK Taiga dramas are available in versions with English subtitles? I'm interested in Shinsengumi but the Musashi series would be great, as would many other titles. Has anyone managed to obtain any of these? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep...and apparently he looked like a shrivelled up monkey...hence, Oda Nobunaga nicknaming him "Saru!".

Incidentaly, Eiji Yoshikawa's novel, Taisho, is about the very story you are talking about.

Hahaha... I agree. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were good but when I saw Kill Bill vol.1 (on hired DVD), I couldn't help myself but think "this is *expletive*" and I cringed right through the movie (actually, in hindsight, I'm surprised I even watched the entire film). My dad, who used to do Iaido in his younger days, thought it was a waste of a good DVD disc.

If you're wondering, no, I haven't bothered seeing Kill Bill vol.2 yet and I intend not to. :silly:

theres also a pretty cool film called Azumi about this hot japanese she-samurai

Azumi 2 just came out...I wonder how good it is?

Azumi 1's special features has the director interview and it shows how they first saw the girl who plays Azumi in a promo an agent sent.

They were after a real tuff girl for the role.

Of course she was all cutesy like "Hiiiiiii!" with the stupid V for victory sign.

The director's reaction was something akin to saying "jesus...its going to ba a looooooooooong day."
