this has been out there for a while but I saw it for the first time and I dropped my jaw. I was always told that in kenjutsu they taught you more about dodging than blocking because the katana can snap/chip if you smacked it too hard against your opponent's blade.

The best thing in this little movie is the sound and music, they try and make it so overly dramatic, it's hilarious. You gotta see the machine gun one though when the blade takes like 6 bullets before finally shattering, they play it in slow mo and with this seriously dramatic music, they make it out to be a titanic struggle.

That's amazing! The only bad thing would be that instead of having one piece of metal coming at you there are now two of them

What kind of bullet they used would make a big difference. In the slo-mo the bullet looks grey, which would indicate unjacketed lead (usually the softest type of projectile, a lot of bullets of this type you can gouge with your car key). If you laid one on a log you could probably split it with an axe, so this might not really be as impressive at it seems at first sight. Standard handgun ammunition is jacketed lead. I'm guessing the armor piercing stuff like cops sometimes use so they can shoot people through cars and such would have had a different effect on the sword.

But... but... WHY!!! Why would you do that to a perfectly good nihonto! My eyes! My eyes!! AHHHH...!!! :D

Nothing really amazing...I've seen 'em do the same thing with the SOG Seal 2000 dagger. Think about it...lead is soft, you can cut lead with a kitchen knife...the force of the bullet hitting the blade dead center would shear it in half.

Soft lead, hot out of a gun, against hard steel. It's kind of a no-brainer.

Yea jacketed (harder) bullet, higher velocity, the sword still deflects a few, but takes a big chip with every hit, with what I would guess is standard military ball - the equivilant of civilian full metal jacket rounds. Steel core armor piercing probably would have taken it off in just a single round or two that hit solid.

Way to burst my bubble, jerk :P (lol, j/k)
anyway, it's still a cool video. I really enjoyed the overly dramatic music as well.

I actually watched the show that does things like this back when I was living in Tokyo. Can't say I'm surprised that they eventually did this, am impressed that the katana split the pistol bullet, am very impressed that even with a chip in it the katana was still able to split a couple of those high velocity bullets cleanly in two. Sad waste of a good katana though.

I totally agree.
Even if the first test (katana vs. .45cal pistol) was impresive with a good explanation for the result, the second test (katana vs. .50cal machine gun) is simple awesome!!.
To think that the sword was able to withstand 5 shots of that thing, and even cutting the first few bullets in half... well... even with a good "obvious" explanation, it's still amazing!!! =D

Well at first i was like HOLY S***. But now, that I rethink what is happening, it seemed sorta trivial. The lead is soft lead designed to splay out and "bloom" once it enters an object where it does its maximum damage. The bullet was aimed towards the sharp edge of the katana which will most definitely cut it at that velocity. The bullet is hot coming out of the gun and it is almost going the speed of sound so I don't know if it had a chance to cool before it hit that sword at the distance it was fired at.
They should try to fire it and let it hit the side of the blade. I'd like to see that too. But it was pretty cool to look at. :)

I know they show it on SpikeTV in the US as "Hey! Spring of Trivia." I watch that show all the time.

Oh boy, we better keep these videos hidden from the kenshin wannabe's or we are gonna start seeing some pretty funny deaths on TV. Hmm, that second video was impressive, even if the rounds weren't armor piercing it was pretty cool, I think I want to borrow one of the 50 cal(M2) from the armory and try that, lol jk. I would also like to see the katana trying to block one not cut it. As for how they got the gun, it is not hard to get a 50 cal...the hard thing is getting the rounds... given how a lot of us are stationed over there, they probably asked a high ranking marine or something, hmm maybe they went up to bush "Hey can we borrow some rounds for our TV show" roflmao
