i would like help with a name of a kata and if i have the fundamentals of the movement correct. we did a kata with bokken where you take three steps forward toward eachother with the last step going wide and making your body low to the ground. from there both draw bokkens and connect bokken at a low angle then move the arm to a higher position and bokken connect again. a step a back to a chudan position then the attacker goes to a jodan position and goes to stike men, and the defender side steps and stikes kote.
i was wondering if anyone knows the formal name and if i have the basic movements correct?
thanks,

If I'm not mistaken, there should be videos of all the kendo katas on the kendo-world site. Try checking those to see if any of them are the one you're talking about.

Hmm, It doesn't sound like any of nihon kendo kata.

The technique in ipponme is men nuki men, nihonme is kote nuki kote.

As JoB said...from what you've described, it doesn't really sound like Nihon Kendo Kata...ask your sensei what it's from and then I bet we'll be able to give you better answers.

You might have better luck asking in the iaido forum, since it's not one of the kendo kata. It sounds like one of the Musōjikiden Eishin-ryū kata, but I can't help you with the name as I've only seen that style of iai performed at special events, but have never studied it.

You're basically doing ipponme and nihonme together. You will revert to chudan when you finish ipponme (before you start nihonme). At least that's what I think you're trying to ask. If you're looking for a specific name for ipponme and nihonme, I don't believe there is one.

But hell, what do I know? I'm just a beginner.....

Could it be (some of) kendo kata 3?
Or something from Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho, maybe Kinon San (Fundamental No.3)?

Based on the description, it sounds like a RikiShinRyu (I am sure spelled wrong) Kata, number 1, or two, they both start the same. IM me, where in PA. If it is RikiShin Ryu, then you probibaly work out in Hershey.

Maybe Sensei tripped and everybody copied him...?

Maybe Sensei tripped and everybody copied him...?That doesn't happen. See clauses A (invulnerability) and B (infallibilty) under section 3.2.4 of the Sensei Act. Those are granted with the super-secret decoder ring.

You are of course right... Sensei was experimenting with a new Kata...

isn't that how the kata where originally developed? Sensei walking with sword, bee comes to sting him..... a new Kendo is born.
