as far as I can tell,,,
on the outside , it's kinda like a sport , where you have a stick and hit the other guy with a stick to score points...
Its also an artform that takes years to get good at...
I guess if I had to use one word to sum up all of what kendo is to me?...."fun"

Kendo is the art of Japanese fencing developed by samurai as a safe way to hone their skills. There is so much more to this that can't be covered by one person or one website. If you type in Kendo, you can find a bit of information about it.
Let me give you a few places to start.
www.kendo-usa.org (http://www.kendo-usa.org)
www.kendo-world.com (http://www.kendo-world.com) - I know that this is the link to this website, but you can check out some videos to see it in action.
You can also look at the signitures below some of the posts since some have websites to their respective clubs and dojos, including me.
This forum is quite active, but not as active as some forums. Just give it some time before you think that nobody will respond. This is an online forum, not a chat room.
One last thing. There is a famous saying that says, "The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked." Your question might seem basic, but we all have to start somewhere.

Lagemos,
Kendo is a very complex martial art. It takes years upon years to gain a true understanding about its true nature, I believe that some will agree with me when I say it's a lifelong pursuit if you truly wish to understand it. It is much deeper to some practitioners than the "Sporty" definition. Kendo is Japanese for Way of the Sword. Through practice, a kendoka will shape his mind, body, and spirit to become alert and still. Students of the art will duel in the dojo or at competitions. It is, in this kendoka's opinion, something deeper than just hitting other people with a shinai, but a way to see what kind of person you are.
P.S. I hope that didn't sound like a d-bag, but I was trying to give you my full definition on what kendo means to me and how important it is to me, too.

On the 6th day of the world, god created the kendo sword <shinai> to make a fun sport where you hit each other with a bamboo stick. The point of the sport? I dont know other than to score points. I think it is funner than chopping a chickens head off. <No i dont kill for fun, I ate the chicken>

asking what kendo is is like asking Mario Andretti how an engine works. it will be extremely difficult to explain it all and you're likely to get a very long explanation.
Andou covered it pretty muh in a short explanation though.
