the five-headed beast that is timeline / sa mu / ginger justice / two decidedly shorter gentlemen will be there, armed to the teeth, and thinking nothing nice.
edit: by shorter, i refer to their total height. the rest is for you to judge, in the showers.

funny showers, those. those motion sensor things didn't believe i was there. there's a conspiracy to make me smell.
incidentally, would i be right in thinking that you and dave bell had an ai-jodan fight on the left-hand shiajo? fierce stuff, very impressive to watch. don't know if you saw the final, but someone else tried to pull jodan on him after fighting in chudan for most of the shiai, which struck me as being an idea not disimilar to saying rude things about people who wear a lot of black in a room full of heavily-armed ninjas.
good day's kendo, characterised in my case by a rather excessive swing to the dark side; i won a fight and drew one, despite not landing a single scoring cut, and found myself engaged in the most psychotically violent match of my life after the other shiaijo'd finished; i've waited a long time for such a golden opportunity to terrify and shame the BKA. i looked over at honda-sensei's table, to see him grinning broadly; i assume he was merely deriving great jpy from my expert demonstration of the esoteric elephant-seal waza.

Great day, great people, great final. Many thanks Kagami Shin!!!!
Just a bloody shame I left my hakama and keikogi there!!
Well done all Nenriki crew.
Jakob, was that you in Jodan against Mr Bell? Jodan vs Jodan !!

Yeah, it was me against Bell..was fun!
In the final, you are talking about Mazouka. He *normally* plays in jodan!. I think the reason he changed was that he didnt think he was going to score from seigan, so he changed to jodan.
As for rooms full of ninja's...I think Nenriki got that one cornered!!

aaah, cheers, the whole second half of that fight makes much more sense now. i was wondering where mazouka's jodan came from, if you see what i mean; thought he might've adopted it because of the deadlock in chudan, but it looked far too good to be something he was just playing with to see if it'd make any difference. thanks for clearing that up.
i didn't realise there were so many jodanites in the BKA; it was very cool, and very informative, to see it done properly. i'd assumed the jodan fighters'd all be six-foot-ten goliaths; watching comparatively well-proportioned people using jodan to such great effect served to underline the effect it has on distance and so on.
i hereby declare the three jodan chaps i saw at bowden to be Very Cool Individuals; watching hard double-handed men cuts being swatted aside with an apparant lack of concern by a one-handed jodan counter was the spectatorial highlight of my day; more power to your (left) arms...
as for my debana post, i thought you might be typing something, and i consider it my duty to get in before you've finished...

aye, congratulations. i recommend locking it away before your next club night out; judging from those photos, it'd end up full of something, and i doubt it'd be ice-cream.
you all looked like you'd got over the collective hang-over, which was worthy of a collective fighting spirit award on its own. i had a cunning plan to drink a small amount of sake and breathe it into the face of any UCL people i fought, in the hope that it'd trigger a proustian memory and cause my victim to faint, or run outside in search of a traffic cone, but, alas, we never had the pleasure.

incidentally, if either of my opponents is on here, speak up; we should compare bruise recovery rates. i've got a corker on one shoulder, and the hand-crunching tai-ataris from the second round've increased my range on the guitar by a good tone-and-a-half.
first round was a mr. saxton, from oxford, i believe; was sufficiently knackered at the end our fight that i tripped over three people's shinais on the way out of the shiaijo, thereby technically cutting off my own feet.
second was a chap in a woody do who graded for shodan at watchet with a friend of mine; sorry, the name escapes me, but you provided me with the most vigourous fight of my life, felt like a real man by the end of that one.
would be good to hear you're both still talking to me, as it were.
apologies for the double post. typing's hard when you've only got one finger...

Well after just about regaining use of my right arm so I can type - what a fantastic day, it has been a while since I was in a competition and really enjoyed myself. Thanks to everyone involved.
It's really good to see the general level of Kendo in the UK has risen so much in the last few years - I still remember when Gibbo was a grinning, fairly shy young man...
As for Matsuda sensei.... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Definately a struggle... one warning each.
Great fun though.

Yep, agree with the comments on the Bell/Schmidt Jodan encounter. Many people I have spoken to have mentioned it. This was my first competition and others tell me I was very lucky to see such good kendo all round.
My own efforts were suitably brief, appropriate to my limited experience. Cheers to both the people who beat me. Couldn't get near you in technique, but tried to match you in spirit - I hope it wasn't a total waste of time!?
Congrats to Nenriki and *Gibbo* - I assume he doesn't mind being called this? Very proud to train with you occasionally at Wakaba. In particular, the later stages of the team competition were absolutely gripping. I cannot begin to imagine what it is like to be able to move that fast.
Also, I see Kazuyo quite often. I am looking forward to testing her sense of humour about her admirers. Thanks for the Ammo! Any other comments, messages, offers of marriage etc....?
PS Jacob, I notice you are in here viewing this afternoon - are you between jobs at the moment then?

thought you might be you, if you get me; can't be many dos that pretty in the BKA.
were we warned, or did we just step out, once each? if we were warned, that makes 2 warnings in two tournaments; rather suggests that i need to work on not being a great big hairy barbarian bully with no technique. alas. i was in a sufficiently brutal frame of mind that i didn't actually notice stepping out myself. think i might need to go and sit on the top of a mountain for a few years and consider the lotus blossom. i have an intense desire to apologise for messing up your lovely kendo, as demonstrated in your other fights...
did you ever get the bugger who chipped your do? criminal damage on such a lovely object. there was one point at which i had a reasonable tsuki opening, albeit at a rather wierd angle, went for it, and pulled it back, for no reason i can remember; i think i didn't want to get that embroidery on your tsuki plate messy. that, and i would've missed and given you a impromptu treachiectomy, which i suspect might've been considered a bit rude, and probably lead to my death at your hands.
as for a rematch, some time in 2009 do? need to get my breath back. many thanks for giving me a taste of my own. shame you won't be lidstoning.

Only the kendo inner circle call him Gibbo. He actually prefers Gibling, or Giblet, but his favourite is Stuey.

were we warned, or did we just step out, once each? . Oh yeah you are right we both stepped/bounced out.
I did better at staying in than my first match where I stepped out loads...ooops.
I had two thoughts running through my head whilst fencing you.. the first was.. "damn he's tough", and the other was "gotta stay in the Shaijo.. gotta stay in." :)
i have an intense desire to apologise for messing up your lovely kendo, as demonstrated in your other fights...
Lovely..??. I am a hacker and mistime my cuts. cheers for the complement though. I dont know If I have the style for Shiai .. I was still in grading mode.
did you ever get the bugger who chipped your do? .
No... one day.. one day. It just means I have an excuse to get one made up with arrows pointing to the sides saying "Hit here if you dare!".

think i'm more of a traditional british pro wrestler type, myself; i love spandex. and where would the BKA be without its greatest free publicity asset, Kendo Nagasaki?
woodido, i watched your first fight, and thought, 'ah ha, get him to the edge of the shiaijo'; after the first hansoku in our fight, you suddenly started having exactly the same thought, and after that, i had nuuuseeng. the grading thing makes sense; lovely big cuts, and long kiai, as opposed to the wristy crap and barking i was tending towards. it worries me that we were basically gut-barging each other to death in front of the whole BKA, but they'll all be doing it this time next year, you mark my words. in iron-fortified, nail-studded, wood-effect dos.
i'm now dedicating the rest of my life to getting good, in the hope of getting a bit of mumeshi-ai. if we coincide, point out the do-chipping scum-pig, and we can tai-atari tango him until he develops some respect for true beauty.
and now, back to my other life as a mild-mannered academic. If Only They Knew...

Does anyone have the video of the final match of the Bowden? Typically, the battery on the camcorder ran out half way through the chuken match, missing my Taisho fight! Aggggghhhhhh, I have hours of tape of me doing badly at shiai, so if anyone has it, I would really like a copy. Cheers
