Qui-Gon gets 6th dan for his wisdom

I would suggest that Jedi knight are more monk than kendo-ka. They do meditation even more than fight. I would be more interested, if some of you recognize any movement?

Yoda's an 8:th dan? Nah, with all that twirling and bouncing around like a high school kid, he can't possibly be more than 4:th dan.

actually, I believe the author even said that jedis were based on budo and samurais.. therefor also on kenjutsu

I think Mace Windu has been 8th Dan all along. Remember, he even beat Darth Sidu in Episode 3. Except, he got tricked by Anakin. Well, you can always argue that Darth Sidu was pretending to be losed by Mace..... Damn movie...

Another Star Wars thread...lol.
Na I think Anakin would be the most skilled and strongest in Episode 3 as far as raw strength is concerned.

Why would yoda be a higher rank than Mace Windu? When they fight Mace is about to own Darth Sidius but Yoda gets pwned.

What you dont understand is that even in Kendo 8th dans can get whipped by 7th dans. Rank doesnt just mean your skill in Kendo character has alot to do with it.

Im no expert but i do know there is a HUGE difference between 7th and 8th dan(HUGEEEEEEE) There is a video hiding on these boards somewhere about it, but in this video there was one sensei thats been going for 8th dan for 30+ years(i might be off by a couple years), and he died before he could pass. I think its called "the grouling challenge" or "the ultimate test" its something like that.

Like Jmarsten said, there are nanadans, and there are nanadans.
Although that video does show the difficulty of the hachi-dan test, they are compariing two completely different spectrums of kendo. The guy who passed (Ishida) is a proffessional kendo player for the Osaka Police, whereas the other sensei (Miyamoto) taught kendo at some community dojo.
Although Hachi-dan is indeed very difficult to achieve, there are plenty of 7th dans who are right up that alley. However there is an even greater amount that is not. That's what makes it so difficult.

I would give George Luca's script writing ability a negative 90 kyu, and then the actor who portrayed Annakin Skywalker (a.ka. Lord Vader) for his action skill, I would give him a negative 1000 kyu. Yeap, that just about sums up my view about them two. Don't get me wrong I like start wars, but. ..sigh, I digress

yodas liek 400 hundred years old, he should be Tenth Dan, easily, and lets be honest he could have owned darth "sidius" during that lil fight, he just felt it was the right time to give it a rest, neway Yoda rules , and i think were forgetin another crucial character , General Greevis and his quadruple nito style, I wud giv him a generous 1st Dan

I would give Wicket the Ewok a 4th Dan. He and his mates face the imperial forces armed with only sticks, stones and bigger versions of the sticks and the stones. And the Ewoks have the best ending song since Casablanca.

I have actually never seen this (and it sounds really interesting), so I'm D/L'ing it and will watch it as soon as it is done.
As for the ranking thing, I'm new, so I won't make myself out to be more of 'n00b' than I already am :)

Yea well, Grievous is a big, fat, cheater pants, because he can use four swords. OOHHH!!!!11111oneoneone. Wow. How geeky can this thread get. Really, but it is kind of fun. Windu is stupid. Obi-Wan could kill him anyday. Anakin is just stupid. Qui-Gon was slower than a skateboard going uphill, and Obi-Wan won anyways. Darth Maul would've been cool to keep alive though. Same with Qui-Gon. It should've been Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon the whole time, and have Darth Maul turn into darth Vader or something. WOuld've been much better.

If Mace were so confident in his abilities, he wouldn't have shown up at Palpatine's office with three other Jedi. He's kind of a tool. So is the guy with the cone-head... can't even defend himself against a couple of clones...
Yoda is like the drunk hachi-dan in the corner with a cigarette. He's really good, but you rarely ever see him in form.
Qui-gon was a 5-dan for sure. Not more than that. Obi-won is 6-dan at least by episode III. Anakin is 4-dan... but maybe I'm relying a bit too much on their ages for all of this...
Episodes IV-VI don't count - Lucas didn't have a clear understand of what you *can* with acrobatics and a sword, that became apparent only when he was filming episode I and he say Ray Parks flipping around as Maul... so Obi-won looks like an old guy who can barely handle himself... I guess he had no good dojos around...
Grevious was not a member of an IKF world - so he is unranked and forced into the mudansha division.

Grievous would be a better batan twirler than an actual sith lord. He sucks. In the video game and the movie. he is also a coward, so he's more like a karate sensei/fake kendo master. Oh yes, I wish the younglings killed Anakin. It would've been so much better.

What if Coruscant was completely wiped out by a weird alien race called the "guys with flashy light swords." Guess what weould happen. The little green 900 year old dude would come out and say some like "protect the people we must." But then a sith lord slips him some drugs through his radar-like ears, and he goes completely wack. Then coruscant dies. That would be kind of a cool movie.

the idea for star wars came from an olde japanese samurai movie called hidden fortress.
i like star wars a lot but i dont really know if i can relate it to kendo. but if i had to i think yoda would be 8th dan , mace would be 8th as well, qui gon would be 4th, obiwan when he finally dies would be 6th or 7th and anakin would be 4th but he becomes 7th when he is darth vader.

If you get the Criterion Colletion DVD of "Hidden Fortress," you can seea n introduciton by G. Lucas, where he gives credit to the movie for the idea of telling the story from the persepctive of two unimportant characters (two thieves in the Japanese movie and R2D2 and C3PO in SW).
The whole "protecting the princess" plotline could easily have come from there too. The Luke, Vader, rebellion vs. empire storyline isn't from Hidden Fortress though.

In the big arena fight scene in "attack of the clones" there are a few kendo players from Sydney Kendo Club running around as jedi knights. I know that you can see one fourth dan and one seventh dan among them.

Darth Maul was a wanker! All that pathetic make-up and fake horns is like a RBSO! And all that flipping is nonsense. It's all about seme, which Darth Maul didn't understand.
Obi-Wan, in episode IV, is really cool. He doesn't need to flip and twirl and all that, because he knows that good style will win, eventually.
I saw EP III the other day and loved it. But I watched Ep II on network TV a few weeks earlier and go so bored during the Ani/Padme Day-of-Our-Lives sequence that I switched off, so I missed a lot of stuff, such as CHRISTOPHER-****ING-LEE AS A SITH LORD??? Oh pur-leeez!! Still, George Lucas resurrected Peter Cushing from the Hammer Horror vaults, I suppose Mr Lee was all that was left...
As for their rankings, well Sidious/Palpatine/Emperor gets a "not-yet-out-of-beginner's-class" ranking for all that melodramatic grimacing during his stoush with Mace "And you you will know my name is the Lord!" Windu.
If only Kurosawa had directed it, what fight sequences we would have had! *dreams wistfully*. Or maybe the fight arranger who worked on Paul Schrader's "The Yakuza" with Ken Takakura.
You know what really shitted me? All that TWIRLING between attacks: as if you're gonna turn your back on your opponent . That and the fact that light sabres seem to weigh about 150grams.
And another thing, no need to worry about HASUJI with a light sabre--just wave it like a stick and hope it hits something...
Am I being too harsh on Mr Lucas?
Nanbanjin: the story I heard from some of the Sydney Kendo people involved in Ep II was that when they were asked to perform their (choreographed) moves, they first of all did them at a speed that would be effective in kendo. They were (apparently) told, "STOP! It's too fast for the cameras. Can you slow it down? No-one will be able to see it unless you do them in slow motion." [insert sound of illusions being shattered]
99.9% of movie swordwork sucks. I never bothered seeing "Kill Bill"--Uma Thurman's "kamae" caused enough pain in the promo stills...

Yeah, I was looking for the door by the end of Kill Bill 1. I saw Kill Bill 2 and realised that I was probably being too picky, went back and saw Kill Bill 1 on DVD and thought it wasn't so bad after all.

In the end, I think it would add up to...
Yoda: 9
Mace: 7
Qui-Gon: 6
Obi-Wan: 7
Anakin/Vader: 8
Sideous: 8
Luke: 7
Maul: 6
At least that's what I think... characters such as Qui-Gon and Maul died though, so they're left with the same rank... the other who lived however, gained more training ect...
I am such a nerd.... *gonk* :alien:

Obi-Wan also has more respect, experience, and other honorable qualities. Anakin on the other hand is brash, arrogant, stupid, and well... stupid. Anakin bought his sword on swordsonline, while the others went to ahnwei, swordstore, and bugei. Serious, Vader was a 7, not an 8. Otherwise it's fine. No kendo for Obi Wan !!!
In Episode 3, there is a scene, where Obi's fence is a typical chinese posture with the left arm pointing to the opponent, the two fingers rigid and the lightsword, pointing parallel to the arm, in hight like a chinese sword chien. It remembered me "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" :chinese:

I saw Ep III on Friday night - I was surprised, I really liked it. I agree with you Ben - parts of Ep II were beyond snoring.
What I couldn't get over was how willing Yoda was to get in there and get down and dirty. It was almost as if someone would look at Yoda and he'd say right I don't like that look, let's fight.
I wasn't so put off by Anakin's fighting this time. I thought that the fighting of all of the actors looked better - they stood up straighter and their arms weren't as stiff. But it required quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to overlook the twirling around mid fight.
Yeah Sydney (and ACT, because I don't want to look like Sydney was the only club in the film [being from Sydney club]) was told not only to slow things down but to make things 'more dramatic' - to wave the lightsabres around a bit more!

everyone is terrible except for general grevious because he has four arms! and hes a robot alien. if i could hold four shinais i would be absolutely untouchable. plus, hes cooler than everyone and he only died because obi wan had to resort to luck and a gun. theres no such thing as lucky gun shots in kendo.

obi wan only won because a bunch of people would get mad if he died. Grevious could crush him with ease. if he kept spinning the lightsabers, obi wan would look like ella fitzgerald in the midst of the D-day normandy landing.
